Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Finding child care that is both affordable and satisfactory is one of the hardest things a parent must do. Too often quality is sacrificed for economic reasons. But are financial restraints the real roadblock to providing quality care? If parents had the option of placing their children in affordable, top-quality care, would they do it? In this timely book, Blau (economics, Univ. of North Carolina) examines America's child-care problem and presents evidence that, on average, the quality of child care is low primarily because parents don't understand the real value of quality care and, in fact, don't demand it. His economic rather than emotional analysis is not meant to provide the definitive solution to the problem but to serve as a starting point for further research and discussion. While it would be of interest to parents and child-care providers, it is a bit technical, and many readers may get lost in all the facts, figures, charts, and data. On the other hand, Blau does a good job of summarizing his findings at the end of each chapter in a digestible language for lay readers. A good choice for most libraries.
