I love these handprint towers and this is my token gift for a shower or a first birthday.

I think this is such a great gift for new parents - whether they be employees, friends or family this is really something they will cherish forever.

We mixed it continuously for about 15 minutes and it did not turn into a "toothpaste consistency" until we let it sit for 10 minutes.

Such a great keepsake idea! Being able to duplicate my daughter's little handprint for her first 5 years is wonderful and will definitely be something I can look back on and also share with her when she's older. I only give it 4 stars because I found the plaster to be very difficult to work with. I knew going into it it'd be messy but trying to get a good handprint took a LONG time. The instructions say once you pour the plaster into the tin to immediately attempt an imprint...good luck with that! I didn't even use all the plaster (per a recommendation in the directions) and it was still a very sticky consistency. I tried several times to imprint my daughter's hand but each time I pulled her hand away, the mixture came with it and I was left with a horrible elevated blob. Ready to give up, and tired of pushing her little hand into the mess over and over, then washing her hand over and over, I ended up just letting the plaster-filled tin sit on the counter for about 20 minutes until it got firmer, almost like a damp clay. I pressed her hand in for one last attempt and it actually came out really nice! At least I'll know what to expect when she turns 2 and we do it all over again. I would recommend this to everyone, but just be aware what you're in for especially if you've never worked with plaster before.

This product worked well for me, however the directions that come with the tin are wrong. It says to add 1/4 cup of water and stir for the first tin. It should say add 1/8 cup water and stir! The first tin is so tiny, 1/4 cup of water turns the plaster into soup! I ended up having to take some plaster powder from the 2nd year tin in order to get it the right consistency! The finished product turned out well though and overall I'm happy with it.

A tip: Wipe some Pam cooking spray on your child's hand before pressing it into the plaster. It really helps!!

Good luck!

I received the first set as a baby shower gift for my boy - some 5 years ago now. Bought a second one for my second son - one year left to do. Grandma jumped right in and bought this for my daughter who is turning one soon. The process is simple enough. I did find at first it took several tries to get the consistency correct, but was easy enough to fix. The biggest challenge came with getting the toddlers to coorperate... found those couple of years, with some help, naptime was a good time to make the handprints. My boys would sleep right through the "procedure"...

You definately need to let the plaster set up a bit so that it's easier to work with, especially with the one year olds, they tend to want to grab the plaster instead of laying their hands flat. But the tins stack very nicely and have a place in the lid to put the childs name and date.

We have one for each child. They are fun to go back and look at. Relatively easy to do (we use Pam to make the kids hands not stick before the impression).

We got this as a gift for our baby and I am SO happy we did not pay for it! This product is awful. The design on the tin leaves much to be desired (as a professional artist I'd like to know who did the awful typeset!) but that's the least of this product's problems. The real problem is the plaster, and after reading reviews on here beforehand, I completely agree with the bad ones. We followed the instructions **very carefully** and the mixture was a complete failure! We mixed it continuously for about 15 minutes and it did not turn into a "toothpaste consistency" until we let it sit for 10 minutes. The water kept floating to the top so we had to mix it occasionally while it sat. When it was "ready" and a "toothpaste consistency" we took baby's hand to it and she was actually pretty cooperative. We pressed the hand and each finger into the plaster and got NOTHING! The plaster was in no way too hard, it was the right consistency for an imprint but we could not get one of her little hand. We gave up after 6 tries (baby was frustrated by then) and I tossed the plaster in the trash. I saved the tin so I might try buying some clay that can be baked and will harden. Don't waste your money on this garbage! And the insert from the manufacturer saying they'll ship you another little packet of plaster for $5.00 ... what a joke! Not worth that. Save your money, this product is so frustrating and disappointing it will have you near tears!

I was very nervous about getting this product because of all the negative reviews but i really wanted to capture my sons handprint at the age of one. I read all the reviews posted on Amazon and even did my own research on other sites to find out how i could get the best results and this is what i can share (for use with the one year old tin)
1. One year old tin is small so best to do it when your child has just turned one or as close to their 1st birthday...kids grow fast and you want their hand to fit.
2. Use really cold water from the fridge (i read that using cold water gives you more work time and the mixture will not harden as fast.
3. Pour a little less than 1/4 water in a bowl and then add powder mix.
4. Stir mix really well until you get a tooth paste consistency.
5. Test the mixture a couple of times using your finger..tap on the counter to level back out.
6. Press your child's handprint into the mixture....remember to hold down each finger for a few seconds to be sure you get a good print.
I got great results and I'm glad i didn't let the negative reviews deter me from purchasing this product.
