5.0 out of 5 stars My go-to book in this area/great for homeschool, too, March 5, 2008
By Mrs. H (burbs of Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
After reading what seemed like every book on homeschooling, I turned to straightforward child development for tips on teaching children. That turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made this year.

David Elkind's book does a thorough job of describing the behavior, reasoning, thought process, activity, and emotional needs of children. This is especially true of pre-k kids and elementary school aged children.

It also gives easily applied suggestions for curriculum, teaching style and even classroom set up for those ages as well.

The theories in this book are logical, easily understood, and still give great insight, in my opinion, into *how* children learn at this age. Over and over again I found little "wow" moments of discovery, along with great comfort in finally having reasons behind specific behaviors and simple, effective tools for allowing my kids to grow in their very best way.

This book, gives a broad brushstroke look into adolescence; but doesn't delve into that age range very far.

The only weakness I experienced was the author's tendancy to wax on about his admiration for Jean Piaget. After awhile that became a bit ponderous, but only occurs in one section of the book.

This is a book I read with highlighter in hand and I'm so glad I did. Often I would remember passages that I wanted to go back and review later. Once I finished this book I felt I had a much better grasp of what my two children are experiencing and what they would respond to in a classroom setting. Every day I apply information I used in Child Development and Education; and every time I do, it's a successful teaching moment.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. Even if we weren't homeschooling, I'd still treasure the information found here with David Elkind.
