3.0 out of 5 stars Should be titled "Does your child have an eating disorder"
I purchased this book hoping to get some information about how I can help my daughter with her eating disorder. About a third of the book is exercises to determine IF your child might have an eating disorder (and much of this is listing myths). Then it skips right into comparing different types of treatment. I found nothing in this book about how I could help my...

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond informative, August 17, 2000
This review is from: When Your Child Has an Eating Disorder: A Step-by-Step Workbook for Parents and Other Caregivers (Paperback)
After seeing Ms. Natenshon on Oprah to discuss the treatment and prevention of eating disorders, I purchased her book and was so pleased to learn how valuable her approach is! This book is the first book I have seen on this subject that actually helps a parent to understand the importance of being involved with professionals in working to heal eating disorders. The information is clear and guides the reader in developing resources to truly help and not just understand the causes of these eating disorders. Her website is also extremely informative and offers resources to work hand in hand with her book. A must have for anyone trying to overcome the frustrations and helplessness associated with eating disorders and help take action that will make a difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does more than inform. Gives parents guidance., September 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: When Your Child Has an Eating Disorder: A Step-by-Step Workbook for Parents and Other Caregivers (Paperback)
This book is essential for parents who are truly interested in helping their children overcome eating disorders. The author conveys a sense of truly caring about what happens to children with this disease and to the families of those children. Mrs. Natenshon does more than give advice. She lets parents know that they can play an integral part in helping their children cope and gives parents direction on how to be involved in their children's recoveries.

5.0 out of 5 stars when your child has an eating disorder, December 15, 1999

This review is from: When Your Child Has an Eating Disorder: A Step-by-Step Workbook for Parents and Other Caregivers (Paperback)
This is the best book I have read on the subject by far! As the mother of a daughter with an eating disorder, I found this book to be a godsend. The author is clearly very familiar with her subjects, because she seemed to relate to everything I have experienced with my family. Unlike some other authors I've read, Ms. Natenshon is not judgmental in her writing, which I find to be extremely important. I urge everybody interested in this topic to read this book and work through the activities - you will be thankful you did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Parent Support Book Yet!, September 13, 2004
This review is from: When Your Child Has an Eating Disorder: A Step-by-Step Workbook for Parents and Other Caregivers (Paperback)
As the father of a 21 year old daughter who has suffered from bulimia for ten years, I found Abigail Natenshon's 'When Your Child has an Eating Disorder' to be the most relevant book I have read on how parents can work with their eating disordered child towards wellness.

It's positive, workbook style provides practical knowledge, insight and tools to help parents increase their contribution to their child's recovery. It's thorough coverage of the stages of illness and recovery, along with practical advice and helpful exercises, allowed us to see the recovery process more clearly and in greater perspective. This provided great anxiety relief and an increased sense of control.

I wish we had found this book earlier in the journey to our daughter's recovery! It is a must read for any parents, family or friends of eating disordered teens.

5.0 out of 5 stars There is nothing out there more helpful, June 21, 2004

This book is my daily reference to help guide me through a very difficult time in our lives. There is really nothing out there that is as easy to use, with actual scenarios and responses a parent can apply to many situations. I have also given it to friends who have children with other problems than eating disorders because the book is beneficial to anyone with children that have problems. It guided me through difficult situations and helped educate me to learn to respond in a positive way to benefit my child and myself. It is a must read for any parent of a child with eating disorders!

I purchased this book hoping to get some information about how I can help my daughter with her eating disorder. About a third of the book is exercises to determine IF your child might have an eating disorder (and much of this is listing myths). Then it skips right into comparing different types of treatment. I found nothing in this book about how I could help my daughter after her diagnosis and between doctor/psychologist visits. I felt like I was reading a college textbook on Eating Disorders 101. As a parent of a child afflicted with anorexia, I did not find this book helpful. Perhaps it would be useful for someone who suspects his or her child has an eating disorder and wants more information.

5.0 out of 5 stars educational, unconditional, and a grand lesson for communicating, July 29, 2006
This review is from: When Your Child Has an Eating Disorder: A Step-by-Step Workbook for Parents and Other Caregivers (Paperback)
I am a 29 year old adult who went through the recovery process of an eating disorder 10 years ago. Upon experiencing a reoccurrence of the disorder, I read this book. I was elated with the knowledge and kindness vibrating off the pages. I have gotten back on track thanks to Abigail. In addition to the education on Eating Disorders, I found this book a GEM on communicating. It has changed the way my husband and I speak and listen to one another, as well as our young children. It encourages family dynamics be explored to help recovery, but is it not a good lesson for all parents (families)to learn to "hear" what is said, and to what is not said. I will keep this book on my shelf as an invaluable resource for Eating Disorders, or any emotional disorder that may come up, for parenting, and for communication skills. Thank you, Abbie for your time and efforts in writting this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for Parents and Caregivers, March 9, 2006
By
This review is from: When Your Child Has an Eating Disorder: A Step-by-Step Workbook for Parents and Other Caregivers (Paperback)
This book is essential for anyone who wants to learn how to love an eating disordered child or adult. We were dealing with this for 5 years already before I found this book, and I can't emphasize enough how encouraging, informative, supportive and instructive this book is! Anyone who thinks they might have a child with an eating disorder would benefit from getting this book as soon as they can, but I have also recommended that our counselors and family therapist buy this book as well. They would benefit from the depth and breadth of Abigail's experience, but also, it would help considerably with their family therapy sessions if they gave the families this book to read. Most books are written to try to help the person who has the disorder. This book is especially for the caregivers and the parents who experience all the heartache and confusion of trying to help their child. Abigail Natenshon really understands that heartache and confusion and is able to communicate care and concern for the parents and families and yet such helpful instructions on steps they can take. She really believes in the importance of the family system to help the recovery process. When I felt like we had tried absolutely everything and nothing worked, this book gave me renewed hope and ideas for pressing on.

5.0 out of 5 stars comprehensive and understandable, February 15, 2007
This review is from: When Your Child Has an Eating Disorder: A Step-by-Step Workbook for Parents and Other Caregivers (Paperback)
I am a MSW candidate at Simmons College with an extra interest in Eating Disorders. I have done a lot of research on the subject and have found this book to be the best I have seen recently. When Your Child has an Eating Disorder is comprehensive and concise. It is the most understandable book, laying out everything in a clear way. I find a lot of books written by therapists convoluted and over intellectualized to the point were one cannot tell what the topic is.

Both layman and professionals will be able to master more knowledge by reading this book than reading a dozen others.

This review is from: When Your Child Has an Eating Disorder: A Step-by-Step Workbook for Parents and Other Caregivers (Paperback)
When you are facing a difficult situation, it is good to have a friend. That was my feeling as I read this book -dealing with a serious health threat to my child left me feeling very alone and scared. This book was informative and gave me hope, helping me realize that eating disorders are treatable. I strongly recommend this book -while the entire book is quite eduational, you can skip around to find what you need. Well written in a "user friendly" tone, it has become a real "go to" reference book.
