Book Description

January 31, 1995
Evan, five years old, hardly stands, much less sits, still for more than a few moments. Jessie is eight -- she's adorable...she never finishes anything on time...she's a dreamer. Cal is fifteen -- he is so impulsive that his parents worry he'll try drugs on a whim.

What do these kids have in common? Do they remind you of your own children?

The most talked-about childhood syndrome of the eighties and nineties is ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). This developmental disorder disrupts a child's life and often results in low self-esteem, poor grades and even social and emotional problems. These problems usually are not outgrown -- without help. But does your child have ADHD?

ADHD is characterized by the following groups of behaviors:

Inattention

-- making careless mistakes

-- difficulty sustaining attention

-- problems with listening

-- failure to finish schoolwork or chores

-- difficulties organizing

-- trouble sustaining mental efforts

-- losing things

-- being easily distracted

-- forgetfulness

Hyperactivity/Impulsivity

-- fidgeting/squirming

-- trouble staying seated

-- inappropriate running/climbing

-- difficulty playing quietly

-- being on the go/driven

-- talking excessively

-- blurting out answers

-- difficulty awaiting turn

-- often interrupting

All children display many of these behaviors at some point. But-according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association, Fourth Edition, for a child to be diagnosed with ADHD, six or more of these symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity must have persisted for at least six months.

Is Your Child Hyperactive? Inattentive? Impulsive? Distractible? offers an invaluable step-by-step program already used by thousands of parents to help you change these behaviors at home. Don't just watch it happen; help your child help himself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful, even for ADD adults!, March 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Is Your Child Hyperactive? Inattentive? Impulsive? Distractible?: Helping the ADD/Hyperactive Child (Paperback)
OK, so you've read Driven to Distraction, and all the other classics you could find on ADD. You understand the problems that ADD poses, and the theories behind it's treatment, but you're still struggling to cope? Help is here! This is the only book I have found that provides what children and ADDults alike are searching so desperately for...REAL STRUCTURE!! :)

I am 33, was diagnosed 4 years ago with ADD/ADHD and even had to leave the workplace because I was such a mess. Like so many people with ADD, medication improved some of my symptoms, but that alone still didn't do it completely. Until I found this book, I was very frustrated by the "try and fail patterns" so inherent in this syndrome! With a little creativity, (and we ADDer's have a lot!) I found it quite easy to tailor the ideas in this book to fit my adult needs and lifestyle and am finding this book a real answer to prayer!

Regardless of the age of your children, every parent of an ADD child should have this book in their armory. I highly recommend it for ADD college students and homemakers as well, remembering what the lack of structure in those situations did to my grades and stress level!

I simply cannot recommend this book highly enough! It covers some basic medical treatments as well, so if you can only afford one book, this should be it! (I found this book first at the local library and was so thrilled with it that I ordered a copy of my own. I would highly recommend getting your hands on a copy of it ASAP before it goes out of print as the original addition is nearly 10 years old! This text should be a classic!)

If you are an ADD adult, I would also highly recommend the following 2 resources also available through Amazon: 1)"Driven to Distraction" for a basic overview of how ADD affects our lives, and... 2)"The Sidetracked Home Executives" for homemakers whose homes are completely out of control. I guarantee that together, these 3 books will absolutely change your life, provided you put the tools they offer, to good use! (Prayer helps too!) ENJOY! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST book on ADHD, June 14, 2006
This review is from: Is Your Child Hyperactive? Inattentive? Impulsive? Distractible?: Helping the ADD/Hyperactive Child (Paperback)
This book is the only one I've found that includes practical exercises that REALLY help children, not only theories as other books I've bought. I highly recommend this excellent resource.
