This is the best book on child development I have ever read. Dr. Hymes was my college professor and his understanding of children's needs at different stages is amazing. We raised our 2 sons with his insight and have personally proven these principles to be highly successful. Dr. Hymes helped me to understand the very critical stages in a young child's development. He fully explains in a clear and entertaining way, the child's need for security, autonomy, and inititive and what obstacles stand in the way of achieving these. This book is the very best and I recommend it to every new parent.

This is the best book on child development and discipline I've ever read (and I've read a lot). It's very simple and doesn't rely on techniques or new ideas. It is simply understanding children and their abilities, and when you understand them, you just Get IT. It is concepts. Some of it is outdated but I enjoy the quaintness. I have marveled at and read this book for 32 years. And you don't even have to sit down and read it as you can just go to a chapter you need, as a reference book, with chapters such as Temper Tantrums, Discipline-What is it?, Discipline- How to do it?, Helping a Child feel big, Readiness to learn, The birth of a new baby..... When you understand how children tick you don't have to set yourself up for oppositional relationship and it's amazing how it improves your patience. I love, love, love this book.
