Early Version of "The Jewish War",
By Gene Barnes (Fairfax County, Virginia, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Child of the shadows,: Including The grave (Hardcover)
Folks who may be looking at this as a potential purchase should be advised that "Child of the Shadows" is an early (1965) version of what has now become "The Jewish War." According to the author's note in the latter book, the earlier version contains some elements of fiction that were largely removed for the later version. The new version is 58 pages long and is presently paired in the same volume with its sequel, "The Victory" (92 more pages). I have only read "The Jewish War," so I can only say that if "Child of the Shadows" is like "The Jewish War," it's the story of a young boy who, against all odds, makes it through the Second World War in Poland while so many of his friends and relatives are murdered by the Nazis. Henryk Grynberg "compleatists," who want everything he published, will still perhaps want this book as a necessary curiosity, but those who want just the best of Grynberg can probably skip it and get "The Jewish War" and "The Victory" -- and of course his other books as they become available. I have no information on "The Grave."
