As a midwife serving a clientele of very well-educated and conscientious mothers, I'm always looking for childbirth books that will help my clients prepare for the natural childbirth that so many of them want. I've been a little frustrated with books that focus on the pathology of pregnancy and the pain that is so often associated with an induced labor where women are strapped into monitors with IVs and pretty much confined to bed. They have no idea what a natural labor can be when a woman labors in her own home, with loving support and clinical care tailored to her personal needs. (And, of course, there's no pain relief like an "aquadural" - laboring in a nice labor tub!) I was thrilled to open the pages of Sandra Roberge's "Childbirth Manual" to read page after page about NORMAL pregnancy and NORMAL labor and birth. This is the best birth book since Spiritual Midwifery! It beats the heck out of books with themes such as, "What to expect when you're expecting induction, epidural, cesarean or vacuum extraction"This book, in combination with Pam England's "Birthing Normally" and Leilah McCracken's "Resexualizing Childbirth", are a sound foundation to help a woman have the best possible pregnancy and birth experience.
