Book Description

May 1, 2001
Written to help the expectant mother sort through the different anesthesia (total pain block) and analgesia (partial pain block) options that are available today, this book empowers women to make informed choices regarding pain relief in childbirth. It describes the recent and dramatic changes in pain relief options including new medications, and the role of anesthesiologists who are continuously creating ways to improve pain relief for labor and delivery to give expectant mothers some control during the delivery process. This book looks at the advantages and disadvantages of anesthesia and pain medications, covers the physiological changes experienced by the expectant mother as they relate to pain relief, and details natural childbirth options.

5.0 out of 5 stars Empowers pregnant women with the information they need, June 3, 2001

This review is from: Childbirth and Pain Relief: An Anesthesiologist Explains Your Options (Paperback)
Dr. Datta does an amazing job of explaining all the pain relief choices including natural childbirth and drug assisted options. The book also talks about all the physiological changes and provides some history of different pain relief choices. The author covers water birth and walking epidurals, as well. The book is written in a very reader friendly format and can be read in a few hours. Childbirth and Pain Relief also has a great question and answer section and an informative glossary. Every pregnant woman should read this book before going into the delivery room.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything About Obstertical Anesthesia, May 25, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Childbirth and Pain Relief: An Anesthesiologist Explains Your Options (Paperback)
Dr Datta has covered every aspect of OB analgesia and anesthesia and more. As a childbirth educator in the 21st century, I know that women want to know everything, as they well should. This book is easy reading and covers physiologic changes, childbirth options, and pharmacalogic pain relief. There are many women who know that they want an epidural and that's that. This is the book for them to start with. Dr. Datta has included good references, websites and a excellent glossary. So for those that want the answers to what OB anesthesia is all about and didn't know what to ask, this is the book for you.

This is such a quick read, you could actually read it while IN labor! Dr. Datta has the unique gift of being able to boil down very complex subject matter into a format easily understood by the average layperson. It is succinct enough to be used as a reference while in the hospital, and is a book that is much needed in today's Ob environment. I would have liked more info on the specific drugs used for anesthesia with an epidural, but aside from that, a great find!
