I'm 58 years old, have played guitar since I was eleven, which pretty much places me sitting trying to learn Joni Mitchell chords by ear. Attending Philadelphia Folk Festivals, hanging out at coffeehouses, playing guitar late into the night with friends who didn't care how well you played, as long as you could harmonize and bring a meal to share (that's for you, Harry:smile:).
I've been teaching myself classical for the last year, and though I love it, something was missing.
I woke up early, turned on the television, and there you were, playing guitar and singing with your mother. To the best of my knowledge, I have never heard your music, Ben, but I love this. It takes me back, and even now, I'm fighting back tears. This is amazing.

I had vaguely heard of Ben Harper until I began watching the last segment of CBS This Morning today... My parents, sister and I stopped what we were doing to listen to the haunting guitar and moving melody of "A House is a Home" and I immediately wanted to know more about this mother and son duo. I am now a fan and plan to add this cd to my collection.

Eddie Vedder was supposed to perform with Ben Harper at the Pete Seeger birthday concert at MSG in 2009 and had to bail, so Tom Morello did, along with these two lovely women. When they finished their marvelous performance, Ben gestured to them and said, this is my mother and my aunt. (like their mother named them "mother" and "aunt." Kids!) I was floored because I know what my mother and my aunt mean within the context of my own life, and the difference is, shall we say, striking. He got the mother and aunt I was supposed to get!! And I said to myself, and have over the years as I continue to talk to myself, why in time doesn't Ben record with them, talk about being handed a gift and just letting it sit there. Well, I don't know what happened to the aunt, but Ben's mom actually has a name, Ellen, and this is one of the most special albums I've ever owned. It's an homage to collaboration, to true family feeling and connection, a reminder that there are countless artists whose work we need to experience, musicians, writers, painters, actors, on and on, that we'll miss because chance is a curse. It also validates living a musical life even if the music isn't what pays all the bills. I wish Ellen Harper would write an autobiography, the conventional kind not just musical, I think she has a fascinating story to tell that people need to hear.

I have been a fan of Ben Harper for nearly 20 years now, and the thing I have admired about him over the last dozen of those years is this:

If he feels like making a certain kind of album with a certain collaborator, he just does it.

Gospel album? Get together with the Blind Boys of Alabama and make one.

Harmonica blues? Get together with Charlie Musselwhite and make one...only this time, release it through Stax.

Folk album? Get together with MY OWN MOTHER...release it through Prestige Folklore.

The amazing thing? It's good! Even, nay, especially the song written by mom.

I used to hear Ellen Harper perform when I was in college. She still sounds great, and so does her son. The songs are well-crafted and well arranged and recorded. This album is full of understated grace. Highly recommended.

been a fan of bens since he started teaming up with the likes of the blind boys of Alabama and the Charlie Musselwhite collaboration.so I had high hopes for this cd since he was hooking up with mom.......but sorry to say it fails the songs just seem to lack energy I don't believe after listening to this a half dozen times in two days that one song or two have bought me back to hear more

I loved every track on this CD. Ben and his mother, Ellen, blend so beautifully together. And the music and lyrics were excellent. I've played it so many times, I know all of the songs by heart. My favorite: Born to Love You. Even if you're not a fan of folk music, you may still enjoy Childhood Home. It's listed as folk, but I detect some blues in there and a lot of soul!
