Childhood Home

Biography

The most affecting albums exist as documents – of a time, place, relationships. Childhood Home by Ben and Ellen Harper is that and more. It is the history of a family written in song by a mother and a son, where they come from, hardships transcended, the place they have arrived.

“This album is a portrait and it's a conversation,” Ben Harper says from the kitchen ... Read more in Amazon's Ben Harper Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Ben Does Folk Music May 7, 2014
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Ben Harper loves his mother. Releasing this album just before Mother's Day was a great gift. It's easy to see Ben's talent came naturally.

This album is different from Harper's other work. It calls back to folk music of the 60's and 70's with just a hint of country. His mother has a beautiful warm voice, they sound fantastic together. I thought this might be an album of children's songs (Childhood in the title), I was wrong. This reminds me of John Prine and Iris DeMent singing together. Harper has a deeper clearer voice than Prine, and thankfully Ellen Harper doesn't have quite the twang or high pitch of DeMent.

This is about as far away from Ben Harper and the Relentless 7 as he could possibly get. The album is mostly folk protest songs in the Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie genre. Childhood Home isn't full of the anger or passion of his previous work.

Of course Harper plays incredible guitar on the album. His guitar playing alone is worth the price of admission.

The fan of Harper's hard driving rocking or blues music, won't find that on this album. Childhood Home goes down a totally different road, one that hopefully people will try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fortunate Enough to Hear You On CBS This Morning May 10, 2014
Format:MP3 Music
I'm 58 years old, have played guitar since I was eleven, which pretty much places me sitting trying to learn Joni Mitchell chords by ear. Attending Philadelphia Folk Festivals, hanging out at coffeehouses, playing guitar late into the night with friends who didn't care how well you played, as long as you could harmonize and bring a meal to share (that's for you, Harry:smile:).
I've been teaching myself classical for the last year, and though I love it, something was missing.
I woke up early, turned on the television, and there you were, playing guitar and singing with your mother. To the best of my knowledge, I have never heard your music, Ben, but I love this. It takes me back, and even now, I'm fighting back tears. This is amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful music... May 10, 2014
By reader
Format:Audio CD
I had vaguely heard of Ben Harper until I began watching the last segment of CBS This Morning today... My parents, sister and I stopped what we were doing to listen to the haunting guitar and moving melody of "A House is a Home" and I immediately wanted to know more about this mother and son duo. I am now a fan and plan to add this cd to my collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Blessing of Great DNA July 21, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Eddie Vedder was supposed to perform with Ben Harper at the Pete Seeger birthday concert at MSG in 2009 and had to bail, so Tom Morello did, along with these two lovely women. When they finished their marvelous performance, Ben gestured to them and said, this is my mother and my aunt. (like their mother named them "mother" and "aunt." Kids!) I was floored because I know what my mother and my aunt mean within the context of my own life, and the difference is, shall we say, striking. He got the mother and aunt I was supposed to get!! And I said to myself, and have over the years as I continue to talk to myself, why in time doesn't Ben record with them, talk about being handed a gift and just letting it sit there. Well, I don't know what happened to the aunt, but Ben's mom actually has a name, Ellen, and this is one of the most special albums I've ever owned. It's an homage to collaboration, to true family feeling and connection, a reminder that there are countless artists whose work we need to experience, musicians, writers, painters, actors, on and on, that we'll miss because chance is a curse. It also validates living a musical life even if the music isn't what pays all the bills. I wish Ellen Harper would write an autobiography, the conventional kind not just musical, I think she has a fascinating story to tell that people need to hear.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fearless May 13, 2014
By J.Z.
Format:Audio CD
I have been a fan of Ben Harper for nearly 20 years now, and the thing I have admired about him over the last dozen of those years is this:

If he feels like making a certain kind of album with a certain collaborator, he just does it.

Gospel album? Get together with the Blind Boys of Alabama and make one.

Harmonica blues? Get together with Charlie Musselwhite and make one...only this time, release it through Stax.

Folk album? Get together with MY OWN MOTHER...release it through Prestige Folklore.

The amazing thing? It's good! Even, nay, especially the song written by mom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic & touching album May 24, 2014

I used to hear Ellen Harper perform when I was in college. She still sounds great, and so does her son. The songs are well-crafted and well arranged and recorded. This album is full of understated grace. Highly recommended.

I heard the Harpers on CBS this morning and thought this would be a good CD. It's terrible. The songs are terrible and the Mother can't sing. Don't waste your money.
