Editorial Reviews

Review

“As a careful observer, counselor, and social watchdog, Taffel gives hope and solid advice to the millions of post–baby boomer parents who feel helpless.”
--Library Journal

“No one has thought more deeply about the dilemmas of the modern parent and child than Ron Taffel. In this frank, funny, and comforting book, he tackles the most troubling problems we face as modern parents. He writes beautifully, and his parenting advice is wise and, best of all, practical.
-- Michael Thompson, Ph.D., co-author of Raising Cain

“Taffel is one of the rare experts in the country who is really listening to children, teens, and parents, and from truly listening, he is able to give unique insight and direct feedback to all of us.”
— Rosalind Wiseman, author of Queen Bees and Wannabees

“I applaud Dr. Taffel for writing a book that addresses the major differences between our current generations. Our children have grown up in a much different environment than we did and it’s great that he has taken all of those factors into consideration and applied them in this book.”
—First Lady Maria Shriver

“Ron Taffel has written an important book that offers a fresh and wise perspective on the challenges of raising children today, as well as excellent advice about how we can best guide them through the treacherous terrain of their ever-more demanding lives. I highly recommend Childhood Unbound.”
—Michael Gurian, author of The Wonder of Boys and The Wonder of Girls

“An engaging read on how society and parents working together can raise healthy children during challenging times.”
—Alvin F. Poussaint, MD, Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School and Judge Baker Children’s Center

“In his remarkable new book, renowned psychologist Ron Taffel has skillfully and perceptively captures the struggles and challenges faced by parents as they interact with kids who are much different from youngsters a generation ago. This book will serve as a major resource not only for parents but for professionals as well who interact with today's children and adolescents.”

—Robert Brooks, Ph.D., Faculty at Harvard Medical School, co-author of Raising Resilient Children and Raising a Self-Disciplined Child

Iloooooove this book!! I want to absorb every word thoroughly before turning the page. This book has improved if not saved my relationship with my daughter, 13 years and son, 10 years. There is no other parenting book with this perspective on today's culture and family dynamic.

This is a thoughtful and though provoking, well written book to reference and read more than once. I have been in education for more than 40 years and currently am an active grandmother. It provides me with a clear understanding in the generational differences and how the lenses of our young ones are vastly different from adults. It is a must read for teachers, parents and yes, even grandparents!!

I was blown away by Ron Taffel's new book."Childhood Unbound: Saving Our Kids' Best Selves--Confident Parenting in a World of Change". The depth of insight, the intelligence, and the intimate knowledge of children's behavior - all in a contemporary context - enlightened and stimulated me. I am a children's camp director and I saw my campers, their parents, my staff and myself in so much of what that Ron wrote. I can't wait to read it a second time!

Childhood Unbound: Saving Our Kids' Best Selves--Confident Parenting in a World of Change

With clarity, precision and concise prose, Ron Taffel has provided tools to parents so they can deal with various problems in raising considerate and honest children in this (paradoxical) very private and very public internet based world in which we find ourselves.

Each child is different but they all have to deal in a fast paced world in which both parents and children are over scheduled and under a lot of pressure. We learn that the goal is not to remake your child because you cannot, but to have your child understand how to deal with the conflicts they face in day to day living and growing up.

I just opened the book in the middle to check it out and now I can't put it down. My son is only 5 but I can see things happenening with his behavior I don't like and also with my own inabilities...the answers are right here (for me anyway) and I am totally absorbed in the book right now. Sooo interesting and so current.

This is a wonderful book, full of the wisdom, warmth and candor that characterizes all of Dr. Taffel's writing. "Childhood Unbound" guides us through terrain that has heretofore been uncharted.

Parenting in this generation is different. We know this, but on some fundamental level are uncertain about what adjustments and accommodations are necessary in order to deliver today's children safely into the future. The importance of this book - - and it cannot be overstated - - is that in reading it, we come to understand not only who our children are, but who we are as well. "Childhood Unbound" calls upon our best selves to face the challenges of parenting today, and Dr. Taffel reassures us that we are equal to the task.

For anyone with children and a typically overextended schedule in this technologically advanced society, it can be the ultimate challenge to understand how to be a good parent. With real life examples, including his own, Dr. Ron Taffel offers superb guidance in understanding how different the world is for our kids...and offers real Solutions so that we can navigate the challenges while focusing on the very positive qualities of this generation. I was riveted, rocked and ultimately given immense hope that we can reach our kids if we just learn how. This is a must-read for any parent, grandparent, teacher, professional, or anyone who needs or wants to understand our kids.
