This book was very informative. As a parent, it made the causes and treatment of nearsightedness very understandable. It also explained simple steps parents can take to help maintain their children's healthy vision.
Dr. Despotidis has written an easy to read book with a wealth of information about nearsightedness and vision in general. Any parent concerned about his/her child's increasing need for glasses will find this book very helpful and informative.

This book is a "MUST READ" for anyone who wears glasses or has children wearing glasses,
This review is from: My Children Are Nearsighted Too: How Corneal Reshaping Helped My Kids See Better Without Glasses... And How It May Help Yours, Too (Paperback)
Dr. Despotidis has really done the public a huge favor. He has taken a subject that few people understand, that effects most of us and our children, and has given insight, understanding, and hope to the millions of people who find themselves "victims" of stronger and stronger glasses.
The book is an easy read, and highlights the current successful, safe, FDA approved, non-surgical treatments of myopia or nearsightedness. The many case examples are inspiring. I highly recommend this book if you are concerned about your or your child's vision and reject the same old recommendations that traditional eye doctors have been offering for the last 30-40 years or more. After you read this book you will definately want to pass it along to a relative, friend, or colleague. Thank you Dr. Despotidis for sharing your expert knowledge and experience. I will recommend this book to my patients. Dr. Stan Appelbaum, Developmental Optometrist, Bethesda, Maryland

Drs. Despitidis, Lee and Tanner have created a thorough, readable and most of all, credible explanation of the science and practicality tied to orthokeratology. "My Children are Nearsighted Too" has been a fantastic vehicle in my practice for patients/parents. It helps them achieve the confidence they need to choose this little understood, but priceless tool which will allow them to realize the visual gifts provided by orthokeratology.
Thank you Drs. Despitidis, Lee and Tanner Peter E. Wilcox, OD Co-investigator of the CANDY Study (Controlling Astigmatism and Nearsightedness in Developing Youth)

Dr. Despotidis is an exceptional practitioner and an acknowledged Orthokeratologist. His opinions and viewpoints are sought after by others in this exciting field. "My Children are Nearsighted Too" is a well written, informative, and concise book that is a valuable resource for anyone wanting to learn more about Corneal Reshaping; how it works and how it can benefit those who wish to slow down and even stop progressive nearsightedness.

A great primer on Myopia and Orthokeratology,

This review is from: My Children Are Nearsighted Too: How Corneal Reshaping Helped My Kids See Better Without Glasses... And How It May Help Yours, Too (Paperback)
As a nearsighted optometrist who has a young daughter, I was extremely interested in "My Children Are Nearsighted, Too." I, like Dr. D., have performed eye-exams on young children and have watched their myopia increase over time. Like him, I have read the scientific studies and tried to determine the best method to limit the progression of their nearsightedness over time. This is not always easy.
Most parents do not have the time or desire to research the theories and mechanisms of myopia development. Fortunately, Dr.D. and his collaborators have collected this information and placed it all in one easy-to-read book. Topics covered include why some people are more prone to develop nearsightedness than others, helpful guidelines on ways to limit eye strain, and the options that exist to try to reduce or eliminate progression of myopia. Special attention is placed on orthokeratology (also called corneal reshaping or Ortho-K). The main goal of this treatment is to eliminate the need for daytime glasses or contacts. That is exciting by itself. But the newest research shows that a side effect of Ortho-K, is the slowing or stopping of myopia progression. The is truly revolutionary. I think the strength of "My Children are Nearsighted, Too" is the balance between its easy-to-read style and technically accurate and up to date information. Interspersed are comments and stories from patients that add a personal dimension. One thing the book is NOT is a self-help book of the "See without glasses" category. While some of those may be helpful for specific people, they are not appropriate for the general population, especially without consultation with your eye doctor. I really like this book and recommend it. I have bought several copies to share with parents who are concerned with their children's vision and development of nearsightedness. While I encourage parents to get as much information from a variety of sources, "My Children are Nearsighted, Too" is a great resource. Nathan Bonilla-Warford, O.D. Tampa, FL

This is an amazing book that answers the unanswered and often unasked questions of parents. Dr. Despotidis uses wit, knowledge, and compassion to ease the fears, guilt, and concerns of parents who want to provide the best for their children.
As a soon-to-be pediatric optometric practitioner, I recommend this book to parents and will continue to do so when I am in practice. A must read for parents who are faced with the difficult decisions about the right eyecare for their children.

An Answer To My Questions,
This review is from: My Children Are Nearsighted Too: How Corneal Reshaping Helped My Kids See Better Without Glasses... And How It May Help Yours, Too (Paperback)
As a parent, I always felt a sense of guilt that my children had to wear glasses nor did I understand why they started wearing them so young.
This book answered all of my questions and broke down technical information in a way I was able to understand and relate to my children. Not only did it provide tips on good posture and proper lighting for reading but also explained all the vision correction options available. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to better their understanding of nearsightedness and the treatment options.

Finally a doctor that "gets it",

Dr. Despotidis is not just an excellent doctor, he is an excellent human being. He understands the frustration and emotional pain parents feel when ever anything goes wrong with their children. He can empathize because he is a parent too and went through the same thing.
This book is great for three reasons: 1. The writing style is very conversational and down to earth. You can almost hear Dr. D. speaking to you as if it was just the two of you sitting at the local coffee shop. 2. The information covers everything from traditional thoughts on eye care to the modern (CRT/Orthokeratology/GVSS, Vision Therapy, etc.) 3. The stories from real patients and their parents seem very genuine. You sometimes forget how awkward and depressing it is to have to wear glasses as a kid. It seems Ortho-K has helped all of these kids feel better about themselves and perform better in school and/or sports. I highly recommend this book, and Dr. D., to all parents. |
