Book Description

The peasants called it "The Storm."

On a cold autumn morning seven years ago, the sky exploded with silent lightning. In its wake, everything changed.

Now the sun rises in the south, if it rises at all. Animals go mad. Crops ripen and die overnight. The Church - a body of miracle-workers who can heal the sick and walk through fire - warns that God's final judgment is at hand.

The world will soon end.

Now, stories tell of men that speak with beasts and peasants who work their own miracles. The Church decries these heretics, hunting them like animals and demanding the same of the faithful.

In a remote village, a small group of childhood friends are caught in the crossfire. Accused of heresy by the Church and sentenced to death, they escape their village as it burns behind them.

But some may find hope.

Their Church hunts them. A cursed world assails them. To survive, one of them will learn the true meaning of her beliefs; another, that some portents can be deceiving. But only one revelation has a chance to save them:

That they are not forsaken. They have each other.

Bestselling Kindle Suspense author Adam J. Nicolai invites you to a land beneath a broken sky, where sorceries clash with miracles, mountains are crowned with lightning, and faith - true faith - can topple empires.

5.0 out of 5 stars A New World is Born December 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In order to make a fantasy world feel authentic and real, you need to have the element of religion. Many fantasy writers forget this one very important aspect. Mr. Nicolai not only includes the religiosity factor but makes it the main drive of the story, creating something that feels fresh in the overcrowded arena of fantastical fiction. His crowded cast of kid characters sometimes threatens to cause confusion, but his characterizations are so concise that I have no problem keeping track of what is happening, and to whom. The storyline alternates between chapters set in present day and those set in flashback, which not only revitalizes the narrative but adds a heaping dose of welcome story/character "onion-peeling". I only felt there was only one major flaw with Children - the fact that I have to wait until 2014 for the next chapter!

Go Iggy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Different than his previous, but still great October 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
So this is a high fantasy, swords-and-magic novel, very different in both genre and tone from Mr. Nicolai's previous works... but every bit as good. Mr. Nicolai's acute sense of plot and pacing is still evident in this longer work (I bought it late last night and finished it this afternoon, and may re-read it later this week). One thing I found particularly laudable: Mr. Nicolai's previous books were essentially single-protagonist novellas, but he manages to bring the same deep and interesting level of characterization to a much larger cast of characters. His ability to portray the often fractious and difficult relationships among these characters is pretty amazing as well. I'm really looking forward to the next in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well developed world and characters November 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Many fantasy books are slow to get going. Often you must rely on faith that there is payoff while you trod through the setup. "Children" is not one of those books. The tension starts early and drives you forward as you learn about these well developed characters. As the story progresses you alternate between "the present" and the characters childhood, seeing the experiences that drive them and bind them together. And despite all the swords and magic, in the end this is a book about people, learning to have faith in themselves and in each other.

I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

A week or so before I started reading Children, I was headed on vacation and looking through my current books - trying to find one that would scratch a particular itch. Fantasy, an easy read, but with some depth to it. This is the book I had been looking for. Too often, fantasy authors confuse narrative complexity with complicated language; not here. The book reads quickly and smoothly, but when you sit back and think about what you've read, you realize there are a lot of interwoven threads and it leaves you with a considerable amount to chew on. Looking forward to book 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic November 17, 2013
By Jan

I have not read fantasy for many years! This was a wonderful book to get back into fantasy. The characters came alive. I became involved with each one of them. This was one of those books that I could not put down and was upset when I got to the end because I wanted it to go on. Please hurry with the next one! I can hardly wait to see what happens! Loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as the cover art makes it look. November 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Books about swords and sorcery are nothing new, but Mr. Nicolai manages to make the magic in his world as fresh and authentic as his young protagonists. There are a couple lulls in action, yet by and large this novel gets its hooks into you. It makes you think, paints vivid pictures, and leaves you wanting to explore his world for yourself.

Children is a fantasy novel, birthing a new world which holds many rich and detailed characters making you constantly want to hear more from the perspective of each individual.

Mr. Nicolai tells this story in a different manner than the average fantasy novel. This story follows the children as a group in the present with periodic detailed jumps to the past for fulfilling character development. These backstories are an inherent part of the plot and very well done as they provide a lot of interesting, fun and very exciting moments of the very young Children (think of the mayhem you may have caused when you were 8-10 years old and how real it was to you at the time). Initially it seems a bit different but before getting too far into the book I became drawn to these backstories and they are all the more intriguing placed within the overall story where they are.

The story overall is clearly just the beginning of a much grander adventure with hopefully many more books to come!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot new author found! January 21, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Every once in awhile, a reader takes a chance on an author totally unknown...in my case, tempted by a free e-book. Opening the book is an adventure; will it be a well traveled path, or possibly the road not taken? In Adam's case...it is a thrill ride every time! I am rarely driven to write a "RAVE" review for a book; but every one of Adam's books have made me stop, think, have goose bumps, and even post to him on Facebook to say "Thank you". His books linger in your mind long after they have been completed. His new trilogy makes his readers want to yell "Hurry UP!" so they can read more of their favorite characters. Don't miss a chance to watch this man become a writer of renown. Be able to say "I read him first". And seek out "Alex" and "Rebecca". Buy them all. You will NOT be sorry. Post your own rating to help him out. I'll be watching, waiting, reading...and buying. Psssss: "Adam-hurry up!"

More About the Author

Hi. My name is Adam J Nicolai.

I write novels that come from the fear I feel everyday, the wild hopes that drive me, and the things I wish were true. My writing may have swearing. It may deal with uncomfortable topics. It may go to places none of us want to visit. The problem is, in our nightmares and daydreams, while driving or showering or sleeping, we all visit these places anyway.

I write so we don't have to visit them alone.
