Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
Alexander, a trauma consultant who's the director of the Center for Community Counseling in Eugene, OR, offers a practical guide for interacting with children who have been traumatized by witnessing everything from burglary to homicide, suicide, and accidental deaths. Speaking primarily to parents and caregivers, she presents both case examples of children she has counseled and personal trauma experiences to display the potential range of emotional and psychological responses. Then she offers a useful range of interpretations of coping mechanisms, suggestions for what to do and say, bulleted lists, transcripts of actual dialogs between children and parents, and a list of resources--helplines, organizations, and books for professionals and children. Recommended for public and school libraries and academic libraries that have clinical or educational concentrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!!!, June 20, 2001
By Jesse Lough (Portland, OR USA) - See all my reviews
This enlightening and captivating book is a user-friendly and wonderful tool to have! I was impressed by this author's ability to educate and inform in very efficient and effective ways. I recommend this for anyone who has a part in working with children. This is also a great reference for parents wanting to know more about how children function, cope, and heal during and after trauma.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource!, September 11, 2000
By A Customer
Finally, a readable resource for parents and care givers of children who have been impacted by the "culture of trauma" in this country. This book is an excellent resource for parents in view of the many instances of school violence we have experienced in the last few years. I was so happy to find real guidelines and specific examples of what to say and do in the face of the constant bombardment of violence on television, in movies, as well as in real life. Concrete, straightforward, but always readable. I heartily recommend it to other parents, teachers and counselors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book..., April 13, 2009
By Larisa (Idaho) - See all my reviews
I was impressed with reading this book. I am psychosocial therapist and this reading gave me a lot of useful information I could use working with the children who are going through a hard time in the family home and school setting. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand children or your child more as well as yourself.
