GREAT ENERGY AFRICAN RHYTHMS,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Children (Audio CD)
I have really enjoyed this CD. It has a lot of variety, and layer upon layer of percussion tracks by Chata Addy, a fine drummer from Ghana (he uses many kinds of drums--high and low and talking, along with bells and shakers). He also plays flute, and adds beautiful flute lines to many of the songs. Addy's vocals are clear and strong, in both Ga and English, and he has a great range. This CD has been equally at home as background music while I work, while hanging out with friends, or while going on walks....it's energizing but not dominating. My favorite tracks: Fume Fume, a traditional song with an undulating beat and powerful vocals; Maba Maba, a sunny rhythm spiced with Addy's harmonica playing; Mi Nya Ho, a beautiful, heartfelt, a-capella style tribute to his mother; Gossips & Whispers, which has a dreamlike quality, in which Addy uses many types of voices and whispers to imitate the gossip of a village; and the complex syncopation action of I Am Who I Am. Other songs include mellow style highlife and reggae, and more. I think anyone who is a fan of great percussion music and African rhythms will enjoy checking out this CD.

Chata Addy is a master drummer from Ghana, West Africa. He is a member of the world-famous African Addy family. Chata has spent his entire life in music. On this CD, an excellent nine track, all of the lead percussion, talking drum, voice, and words are from Chata Addy.

When I think of African music, this CD, "The Children," comes to my mind. The rhythms are tight and give high energy dance music. The tracks feature talking drum, congas, flute, sax, bass and rhythm guitars. I hope Chata Addy produces more of his Afro-Reggae, Funky Highlife music on another CD-soon!
