"Children in Crisis" was written in 1998. Staggering statistics reported by Glenn Myers in his book continue to reflect conditions today. The spiraling crisis faced by children in underdeveloped nations continues to rise.

Malnutrition and the resultant crippling, retardation, and to other debilitating diseases have in part been replaced with a new plight, a new crisis. Child labor and forms of slavery are commonplace. Extreme poverty, lack of education, and abuse add to the nightmares experienced by these children.

Modern warfare and recruitment of adolescent children to take part in and witness the atrocities of violence and death have created trauma in the minds and lives of these "child soldiers." These children in crisis are exploited and now make up a big part of the sex industry's workforce. Myers details the problems, reports on the failure of the governments, the church, and the community by neglecting the urgency faced by children in crisis.

I was encouraged by the positive steps that can and are being taken to renew the role of the church in helping minister healing and reform in this complex arena of need. UNICEF and the Christian community are making inroads in intervention providing education, training, and a holistic approach to meeting the physical and spiritual needs, by providing street workers, drop-in centers, and night shelters.

Photographs included throughout the book depict children in various circumstances and stages of needs that clearly illustrate the crisis they face.

The reader is encouraged to become active in intercession, networking, and church planting. "Children in Crisis" is an eye opening experience, a call to action, and provides excellent resources for getting involved. Timely, important, compelling.

This small booklet is packed with information. Myers discusses children of labor, on the streets, of war, of the sex trade and in crisis. While offering statistical facts, it is also chock full of God's heart for hurting children. This book was helpful in fueling specific prayers for children at risk.
