Book Description

April 30, 2009 1602643865 978-1602643864
"Do you have anything to say?" the judge asked.

My husband, Tim, looked down to hide his shame.  "I took away her dreams."

I swallowed hard to hold back tears.  After eight years of marriage, supporting him through medical school, and trying to conceive, I couldn't bear the pain of his affair and the divorce he sought.

I left the courthouse where I worked as a court reporter thinking my life was over. I had lost the man I deeply loved and wanted a child more than anything. Now the other woman carried my husband's baby. Jealousy consumed me. Even my friends at church knew she was pregnant before I did. No one told me--not one person. But God did.

I couldn't imagine being single again. I couldn't imagine being happy again. I couldn't imagine ever being a mommy. How could he leave me after all I had done for him? I loved Tim too much to hate him. I felt like a fool for hanging on to broken dreams as my biological clock reminded me each month of my barrenness. Desperation had given way to acceptance of the inevitable, but was God impotent to mend my broken heart? Despite my unbelief, I knew God held the answers to my future. I clung to that as I clutched my Bible and cried.

Twenty-five years later, I wrote Children of Dreams, a true story of God's redemption that changed my life--forever!

Editorial Reviews

"Children of Dreams" is a very much recommended read for Christians considering adoption.
--Midwest Book Review

Children of Dreams is a tale of hope and faith and finally fulfillment.  In the end, the Psalm was for her fulfilled: "He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the Lord!"
--Christian Book Review

"The story is compelling, heart warming, thrilling, and to describe it as an adventure is an understatement."
--Carol DeMar, American Vision

"I was moved by Lorilyn's story of her going to the ends of the earth to find her daughters."
--Jerry B. Jenkins, Novelist & Biographer, owner, Christian Writers Guild.

Lorilyn graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Alabama in 1991. Her studies included spending two weeks in Israel at the start of the Gulf War and touring England, Australia, New Zealand, and several countries in Europe. She later attended the Institute of Children's Literature and earned her Master of Arts in Creative Writing from Perelandra College.

Lorilyn says, "When I start to doubt that anyone is reading my books, I remind myself of the millions of people who have read my captions, even all of my mistakes. The best thing about creative writing is you can make your words perfect. With captioning, it's live and you only get one chance to get it right."

Lorilyn has two daughters whom she adopted from Nepal and Vietnam as a single mother. She homeschooled both of them, the older one through high school, and believes that the hope of the United States may rest on the conservative values homeschooling families instill in their offspring.

"If we fail to teach our children how to live out their Christian faith practically, we will have lost an opportunity to impact the world for good. It only takes one generation to forget the past. As JRR Tolkien said, 'There is some good in this world and it's worth fighting for.'"

5.0 out of 5 stars Hope and Joy June 18, 2009
Until reading "Children of Dreams" I had no idea how difficult it was to adopt children from a foreign country. Lorilyn Roberts' inspiring story doesn't mask her rollercoaster of emotions as she struggles to trust God when faced with insurmountable problems. She boldly faces her fears, renews her faith and ultimately experiences joy amidst her trials. Her beautiful writing draws you instantly into an exciting story of love and faith. This book contains two stories of adoption. She adopts one daughter from Nepal and a second daughter from Vietnam. Both stories are heart warming and explain the struggles that are typical during the adoption process. I can highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering adoption. "Children of Dreams" proves that even in our darkest hour God's holy presence is with us and He can turn sorrow into joy. This is one of the most inspirational stories I have ever read. I recommend it highly to anyone who loves a good story!

5.0 out of 5 stars You don't want to miss this book! September 2, 2011
When I received my copy of "Children of Dreams" in the mail I thought I would just open it and take a look. Before I knew it, I was on Chapter Eight and looking forward to reading the rest of Lorilyn's story. Even though this is a non-fiction book it reads like fiction. Lorilyn has put so much detail into her story you feel like you've been transported to the far regions of Nepal and Vietnam along with her. She tells of her trials and hardships she endured to adopt her children Manisha and Joy. Throughout the book she relates the process of adoption with our adoption by our heavenly Father. You will not look at adoption the same after you read Loyilyn's book. You will not be sorry you read "Children of Dreams" whether you are adoptive parents or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read! April 22, 2011
By Eddie
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Children of Dreams is a must read for anyone going through the foreign adoption process, preparing to adopt, or would like to see the commitment a parent must dedicate their life to in order to bring a child home.

Corruption, heartache, cultural challenges all stand in the way of adopting. Lorilyn endured this process twice. I appreciate her honest writing as she shares her inner struggles and hope. The road to each adoption was paved with a series of miracles so that it's easy to wonder how anyone endures the process at all. Just as the adoption seemed hopeless, the Lord would open a door. As Americans, we don't understand the mindset of impoverished nations. Manipulation, corruption, and the expectation of bribes are a normal part of life in many countries.

Experience the journey as Lorilyn takes you through the adoption of her two daughters. Watch her grow and learn to trust in God. This unique book is a must read for anyone. It gives a greater appreciation for the analogy the Bible uses when we are called the adopted children of God.

Children of dreams

"It soon became clear to me that the adoption of my children wasn't that different than God's adoption of us..."

Overcoming loss, separation, and abandonment, Ms. Roberts shares her heart and addresses many thoughtful questions and circumstances she endured on her journey of international adoption. Comparing her situations to Christian principles and beliefs, she shares some of her most intimate emotions as well as battles during the process.

The what ifs and suppose... Questions plague her, and she decides to trust that God's will must be done.
"only God could take away my slavery to the fear that paralyzed me. As fears grip on me let go, God held me in his arms...and spoke silently to my heart, "I love you."

Thru heart wrenching and painful Circumstances, Lorilyn shares with us her struggles to find happiness and contentment after the bitterest of trials. Brought low, she wonders to herself if God will ever bless her with peace and contentment again. Is it possible after betrayal of the most acute kind? Would she have children of her own?
This is her journey.

Children of Dreams is a beautiful true story that God unfolded in Lori Roberts' life. Every one of God's children has a story of how his glory has given them life and made it beautiful and valuable. It is unfortunate that these are not always told and such a blessing to be able to read all the carefully and skillfully crafted intimate details of the wonderful, miraculous, and glorious things he has done. It reveals what C.S. Lewis calls, "The Wieght of Glory" that God has placed on each human life. In her story Lori shows us just what value God has placed on our lives through adopting us as his children. God revealed this to her in a special way when he redeemed her dreams of motherhood by giving her beautiful children from other nations to love as her own.

I was reminded of Shattered Dreams by the Christian Psychologist Dr. Larry Crabb and the story from the Bible he uses of Naomi. She lost her husband and her two sons and had to move back to Bethlehem a widow and childless. But she is redeemed through the marriage of Ruth and Boaz, her kinsman redeemer. That book ends with her grandson on her lap, in the city where Christ would eventually be born, of the same line as the very child she was bouncing on her knee. Lori's story is book ended with scripture and woven throughout. Like Naomi, she is an encouragement and example to other women who have had their dreams shattered.

Lori's background as a court reporter, news captioner, and student of the Word, give her a knowledge and way of writing that is informed and eye opening as she tells of her exciting travels to other countries. She moved forward in faith with daring persistence despite grave obstacles on the way to retrieving and caring for her beloved children.
