Book Description

Special Needs Collection July 15, 2000
Fragile X syndrome is believed to be the most common genetic cause of mental retardation, even more common than Down syndrome. It can result in a wide range of developmental delays, learning disabilities, and physical characteristics -- which all tend to be more pronounced in boys than in girls. At last, there is a comprehensive book on fragile X syndrome for parents. The first and only book of its kind, this book provides a complete, sensitive introduction to fragile X syndrome, an inherited, genetic condition caused by a mutation on the X-chromosome. This new guide is written by an experienced, caring group of parents, doctors, therapists, and teachers, who offer an in-depth look at the issues and concerns affecting children and their families.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Woodbine House has done it again! They have created another thorough yet easy-to-understand guide for parents of special-needs children. This one is especially important because of the absence of other good parenting texts on Fragile X Syndrome, which is one of the most common genetic causes of mental retardation. Recent evidence suggests that it may be even more prevalent than Down Syndrome. The book follows the publisher's well-established format, covering topics such as diagnosis, medical concerns, family life, education, legal issues, daily care, and advocacy. Each chapter closes with statements from other parents. As usual, the resource list in the back is well worth the cost of the book. Of special note is the chapter on education, which offers one of the most extensive coverages of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and other educational hurdles offered by any book in recent years. 5.0 out of 5 stars Telling it like it is...., October 14, 2000
This review is from: Children with Fragile X Syndrome: A Parents' Guide (Paperback)
Jayne Dixon Weber has been there.....she KNOWS what it's like to raise a child with fragile x syndrome. I met her on a trip to Denver with my son, also affected by FXS, and was impressed by her. All of that comes through in the firm grasp of the facts in her book. It's hard to describe this life to someone who hasn't been there, and Jayne does a remarkable job. I find her work to be professional and compassionate. I think this book would be a wonderful addition to a parent's library as well as that of educator, social worker, doctor, etc. It's a VALUABLE personable easy to read book, from a true veteran.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for any parent of a child with Fragile X....., September 15, 2001

This review is from: Children with Fragile X Syndrome: A Parents' Guide (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book. It is the first that I read after finding out my two children have Fragile X. You'll find yourself referring to it often during your journey. Jayne Dixon Weber really gives you insight on many different issues. My son's teacher even bought a copy for herself.
