Book Description

January 1994
By studying children's clothing and furniture, Karin Calvert surveys American conceptions of childhood over the course of 300 years. She argues that parents have consistently tried to mold their offspring into the prevailing notion of childhood, and identifies three distinct eras in American parenting, in which children have been seen in turn as "inchoate adults", "natural creatures", and "innocent nestlings."

It might be offputting to general readers to say that Calvert's study of childhood is a seminal work in "material culture" (study of historical artifacts to interpret culture) studies and childhood history, but this is not full of boring academic jargon. Calvert looks at children's furniture and toys, and how kids are portrayed in portraits and photos, to explain changes in childrearing beliefs and practices. As a historian of childhood and costume I disagree with some points, but find most of Calvert's analysis accurate and all of it thought-provoking.
