5.0 out of 5 stars Definite album of the year material! September 6, 2011
By A Customer
Format:MP3 Music
There are some albums that should never been taken at mere face value, like Touche Amore's Parting the Sea Between Brightness & Me, Defeater's Empty Days & Sleepless Nights and...well, any Oh, Sleeper album.

If you know Oh, Sleeper`s previous material, then you know that their provocation through seemingly blasphemous lyrics, imagery, album titles, etc. is very much intentional. They want you to dig further. They're practically begging you to look deeper in to their message, opposed to just scratching the surface. Their third full length album, Children Of Fire, is no different. In fact, I think I've dug deeper into this album than any of their previous releases.

Children Of Fire--the band's first album featuring new drummer Zac Mayfield and bass player Nate Grady--is a full concept album that begins where their previous album, Son Of The Morning, left off. It creates a scenario where humanity believes God and Satan are both dead, and people begin to live without concern for their actions. It follows a Christian father and his atheist daughter as they question what they believe (or don't believe). I don't want to reveal too much about the album's concept here, but let's just say it doesn't progress the way you would expect.

Lyrically, this album doesn't hold back. With such rage-fueled exclamations like "I'll marry a blade to his throat!", "Make my grave or animate my veins!", "I saw God die!", "Now cut, cut until the head comes off!" and "Make him beg for his life!", you'll find yourself feeling personally involved in the album's story. I was particularly moved by "Hush Yael", which is a heart-wrenching song based on an attack that took place in Nahariya, Israel in 1979 where a family's home was invaded by Palestinian terrorists. Two year old Yael was accidentally suffocated while hiding in a closet with her mother as the terrorists murdered her father Danny and four year old sister Einat in cold blood by drowning Danny in the ocean and then smashing Einat's head into rocks with the butt of a gun. I get goosebumps every time I listen to it.

While the album's lyrics are indeed powerful, its musical intensity is just as unforgiving. If you, like me, weren't very impressed with "Endseekers", the first song they debuted from the album, don't let that concern you in the least. "Endseekers" is merely the warm-up. Immediately following, "Shred Your Soul" and "The Marriage of Steel and Skin" are two of the most intensely chaotic songs in the band's catalog. "Dealers Of Fame", "In the Wake Of Pigs" and "Claws of a God" continue the barrage of dissonance and technicality from guitarists Shane Blay and James Erwin. "The Conscious Speaks" and "Means To Believe" offer brief acoustic reprieves from the relentless aural attack, before you're thrown back into the madness.

Alternating between Micah Kinard's passionate, throat-shredding screams and Shane's soothing, soulful cleans, the vocals presented here are nothing short of flawless. Now that we've been introduced to Killtrox and the Motherships (Micah's side project) and Anullaby (Shane's solo project), it's easy to hear vocal similarities between them and Children Of Fire. "Hush Yael" and "The Family Ruin" are particularly excellent examples of this. Speaking of "The Family Ruin", it's one of the most beautifully haunting songs I've ever heard, and it showcases the incredible diversity that these guys offer.

Because Children Of Fire has so much depth both lyrically and musically, keeping this review at a reasonable length proved to be an exercise in futility. Beautiful lyrics speak to me in a way that poetry cannot; and I'm fully convinced that Oh, Sleeper is a band that marries storytelling and music like no other. Add to that the skillful musicianship and songwriting presented here, and you get a release that is definite album of the year material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensational! October 6, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Have loved Oh, Sleeper since just about the beginning...ever since they released their album When I Am God. Quality material! I have not missed an Oh, Sleeper release since! I actually preordered this album. Oh Sleeper has grown to become one of those bands in my book that I no longer have to listen to any material by them to know that the music they release is going to be good...I already know it, and the same goes for this album. This album simply kicks @$$! If you're into metalcore music or just metal music in general, I highly recommend checking these guys out! Choice listening!

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm in awe. September 14, 2011
Format:MP3 Music
When I Am God was impressive, Son of the Morning was terrific, and Children of Fire is nothing short of amazing. This album is brutal, technical, and beautiful, and the band's story-weaving prowess has reached a brilliant new level. Oh, Sleeper also experimented with a couple of acoustic tracks this time around, and they're a delight.

I'm a huge August Burns Red fan, but this is hands down better than Leveler.
