Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grades 3-6--This book begins with a simple map of the island, placing it in its geographical context and indicating its significant cities. A brief history is followed by descriptive portraits of children and their families engaged in a variety of activities in different cities across the island, beginning with San Juan. Simple declarative sentences convey information about the youngsters, their parents, the countryside, celebrations, foods, games and sports, and jobs. The islands off the eastern coast are also noted, and brief mention is made of the Vieques controversy. Ta'no and Spanish words interspersed throughout are thoroughly explained. The abundant, attractive color photographs clarify and expand on the text. While certainly not comprehensive, this book is worth considering to supplement other titles, especially where information on the people of the Caribbean is needed.
