This review is from: Children of the Red King #7: Charlie Bone and the Shadow - Audio (Audio CD)
Charlie Bone and the Shadow by Jenny Nimmo was a great addition to her series. I teach Science and also run the Literary Guild Reading Club for our school. So I like to read what the kids are reading. I also like to be able to recommend books to them that I think they will like. I have enjoyed the Charlie Bone series. Her writing is easily read and she has a nice use of words. The characters are well developed and the students relate to them well. She has a nice mix of good and evil characters with a lot of humor thrown in. The book is a nice length and the ending makes you anticipate the next book.

I am 16 and have followed Charlie Bone since the series came out. I love these books and I think they are great for any age. The characters are so relatable, and I have always told anyone who would listen that I would want to play Olivia if they ever made a movie. Now I am a bit old, but would still love to.

Did you ever dream about waking up and having powers? Well Charlie Bone found out that he could go into pictures and artwork. Charlie, along with his friends, need to save the endowed (a special group of "gifted" children) and save Billy from the evil shadow who is trying to destroy the good. Will they destroy him or will Charlie Bone finally lose? Read "Charlie Bone and the Shadow" to find out what happens to Charlie and his friends.
This is a book that keeps you wanting to read more. You will never see half the things coming. Once you finish one great book you will want to go directly into the next. I would recommend this to anyone who liked Harry Potter, mystery books, and magic. It is not the same as Harry Potter, each kid has their own special magic and they work together to defeat the evil. Jenny Nimmo is a British author of numerous great books for children, including many fantasy and adventure novels. She has many books about a lot of different subjects. Nimmo is a wonderful author and I would recommend a lot of her books. Read as Charlie encounters many crazy problems and overcomes them with the help of his friends in all seven books. Brian

This book was really good. I love the Charlie Bone series, now that there is no Harry Potter to look forward to these are the next best thing.
They are children's books, but, just like Harry Potter and Little House on the Prairie they are very entertaining for adults also.

Book the 7th is a real page turner...,

This review is from: Children of the Red King #7: Charlie Bone and the Shadow (Hardcover)
I liked this book much more than I thought I would. I have always enjoyed Jenny Nimmo's books, particularly the Magician series. The Children of the Red King series has been on and off, but this volume was way better than the previous one, as there is more action taking place.
Charlie Bone is once again facing danger when his awful Grandma Bone brings a mysterious painting into their home and deposits it in their cellar, under lock and key. Knowing full well that Charlie has the power to travel into paintings, she knows his curiousity would get the better of him and that he would find a way into the cellar. So begins yet another adventure for Charlie Bone in this seventh novel, Charlie Bone and the Shadow. Charlie is facing a darker year at Bloors Academy as Nimmo puts him in much more danger than she has in the past. The Bloors are getting nastier and the evil descendants of the Red King much more dangerous as they try to create a portal for the Shadow to reenter their world. There is a big secret surrounding Billy Raven causing the sinister Bloors to hatch a plan to make him disappear before the secret is found out. Charlie wishes to protect himself and his friends but even his Uncle Paton, who has always been his most loyal ally, has been away lately for lengthy periods of time, leaving Charlie to fend for himself. I congratulate Nimmo for making this a real page turner. The double spaced type made it an easy read and I covered 100 pages in less than an hour. The drama builds throughout the book but unfortunately falls flat at the very end as some of her twists prove predictable. A very entertaining read in all.

Ty Dye,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Children of the Red King #7: Charlie Bone and the Shadow (Hardcover)
His name is Charlie Bone, and he is a 12 year old boy going to Bloor's Academy. Plus he's nothing close to customary and Charlie knows he has a gift and he uses it against the evil in his town. But when the evil kids with powers try to release a desperate evil shadow from a painting, he doesn't know if he can stop them this time. Charlie, a descendant of the Red King, has an endowment which allows him to travel into paintings. There are only a few left of his kind.
When his aunts and one of his grandma's puts the painting in the basement his curiosity overwhelms him and he goes into the painting, but escapes. Everybody from ages 9-12 would love this book. Charlie has a long range of emotions ranging from desperate to ecstatic, mad to not mad. When Charlie's friend Billy gets sucked into the same painting Charlie did, Charlie tries to go into the painting and save him. Then on the way there Charlie has the craziest thought what if Billy doesn't want to come back? In the book Charlie Bone and the Shadow By Jenny Nimmo people have powers Like kids can make storms make illusions and travel through paintings. In the book their's an evil side and a good side and they fight each other throughout the book. This book really uses rich adjectives and gives a very clear picture in your mind. Read this book if you're a kid needing a book to read.

In this series the children have special powers which some use for evil and some for good. Charlie Bone, the main character, has many good qualities which endear him to his readers. I found this to be a very engaging series suitable for anyone in the third grade and up. An added bonus is the large spacing between the sentences that helps readers stay on track when reading. Compared to the other books in the series, we found that we had to read a lot longer before we could get to the exciting parts. The previous books were faster paced. We still enjoyed this book.
