Editorial Reviews

Review

The author/illustrator of this book has come up with a novel method of inspiring interest in the solar system. The book opens with a full page representation of the sun, with an extended caption describing its structure, temperate and dimensions. The remaining pages have large circles cut in them, through which, as seen through a telescope in space, it is possible to view and read about each of the planets, satellites and asteroids in order of their distance from the sun. This visually compelling book with enthral and entertain readers at the top end of Key Stage 2. Junior Education 20050401 The book opens out like a tunnel through space, enabling readers to tour the planets. Each page contains brightly coloured illustrations and essential information about the planets, the Sun and the asteroid belt. Fun facts include the length of each planet's year, day and its maximum distance from the Sun. This is a great book to use with the whole class. Junior Focus 20050801 This book pulls out into a huge representation of our solar system. Each planet is described in detail giving distances, diameters, angles, circumferences and so on. For example, did you know that the Sun's temperature is about 15,000,000 degrees C. A great journey into the stars. -- David Betty Bookmark --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the Publisher

It would be hard to find a better way than with this book to introduce young children to the concept of the Solar System. From the time children are very young, it is important to encourage them to understand how the human race fits into the big picture. Using the text as a resource (it would take at least a five or six year old to follow the language right from text), we can give simple explanations while always respecting our children's enormous capacity for knowledge and understanding. An important concept to explore is that our planet is just one of the Sun's 'kids'. Human beings are always trying to learn more about the other 'kids' and about our relationship to the Sun so that we can understand better how to be a responsible member of our Solar family.

Because of the astounding visual appeal of this book, it would be a crime to keep it in a book shelf. It should be pulled open and left on display on a surface in the family room, on a child's dresser or on a daycare, nursery school or classroom shelf. Just that visibility will make it a recurring source of curiosity and conversation. From counting the planets to calculating the difference in diameters, and measuring axis angles, graphing according to distance from the Sun, length of year, circumference or diameter, working with billions and trillions (which, by the way, do not have the same value in every country), countless math concepts can be introduced and developed as we use this book.

As children begin to study and explore the Solar System at school, Children of the Sun will be an invaluable personal resource for information, understanding and as a visual aid for a project or as a model for students to construct their own version of the tunnel through space. Its usefulness and appeal extended to high school and college students as well as to teachers.
(By the way...that big numeral which describes a light year reads: Nine trillion, four hundred and sixty billion, eight hundred million kilometers - in North America, that is!) --This text refers to the Pop-Up edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Concept, July 6, 2000
By A Customer
I like this book because of the fact that it's format is not traditional. I love seeing interesting subjects, such as the planets, presented in an interesting way so as to capture both the child's and adult's imagination. This book does it all. The illustrator, Arthur L'Hommedieu, shows us the planets - and asteriods! - from the sun's view, in perspective, as a tunnel. You open up the book to a vivid view of the solar system, then page by page read pertinent information on each planet, as well as getting a single view of it. Stretch the book out a little, as it is accordion-style, for a stunning 3-D view! I recommend this over any other children's book on the planets. It's not a dry rehashing of scientific information - it's FUN!

1.0 out of 5 stars Incorrectly Assembled, December 31, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Children of the Sun (Giant Edition) (Information Books) (Paperback)
This 21 page hard cover book was not correctly assembled in China. Pages 12, 15, 16, 17 and 18 are included twice. Pages 1 thru 6 and page 9 are missing entirely. Therefore, planets Mercury and Venus are missing and the "see-thru" effect from the Sun to Pluto is ruined. Our Grandson was disappointed on Christmas Day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking! *Ü*, April 19, 1999
By A Customer
"Children of the Sun" is one of a kind. It's fascinating - for the children as well as the adults, for the facts stated in it are not common knowledge that is easily obtained, but a product of extensive research, outlined in a comprehensive and assesible manner. The artwork is simply splendid! It is colorful, which would most certainly appeal to the children, but it is also educational and realistic and may be helpful to teenagers and even adults. The paper engineering composing the book is simply unique. It allows it to be Child's play, as well as the educational instrument. Applause to Mr. Arthur J. L'Hommendieu!
