Because of the astounding visual appeal of this book, it would be a crime to keep it in a book shelf. It should be pulled open and left on display on a surface in the family room, on a child's dresser or on a daycare, nursery school or classroom shelf. Just that visibility will make it a recurring source of curiosity and conversation. From counting the planets to calculating the difference in diameters, and measuring axis angles, graphing according to distance from the Sun, length of year, circumference or diameter, working with billions and trillions (which, by the way, do not have the same value in every country), countless math concepts can be introduced and developed as we use this book.
As children begin to study and explore the Solar System at school, Children of the Sun will be an invaluable personal resource for information, understanding and as a visual aid for a project or as a model for students to construct their own version of the tunnel through space. Its usefulness and appeal extended to high school and college students as well as to teachers.
(By the way...that big numeral which describes a light year reads: Nine trillion, four hundred and sixty billion, eight hundred million kilometers - in North America, that is!)

Interesting Concept,
By A Customer
This review is from: Children of the Sun (Information Books) (Paperback)
I like this book because of the fact that it's format is not traditional. I love seeing interesting subjects, such as the planets, presented in an interesting way so as to capture both the child's and adult's imagination. This book does it all. The illustrator, Arthur L'Hommedieu, shows us the planets - and asteriods! - from the sun's view, in perspective, as a tunnel. You open up the book to a vivid view of the solar system, then page by page read pertinent information on each planet, as well as getting a single view of it. Stretch the book out a little, as it is accordion-style, for a stunning 3-D view! I recommend this over any other children's book on the planets. It's not a dry rehashing of scientific information - it's FUN!

Incorrectly Assembled,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Children of the Sun (Giant Edition) (Information Books) (Paperback)
This 21 page hard cover book was not correctly assembled in China. Pages 12, 15, 16, 17 and 18 are included twice. Pages 1 thru 6 and page 9 are missing entirely. Therefore, planets Mercury and Venus are missing and the "see-thru" effect from the Sun to Pluto is ruined. Our Grandson was disappointed on Christmas Day.

Breathtaking! *Ü*,
By A Customer
This review is from: Children of the Sun (Information Books) (Paperback)
"Children of the Sun" is one of a kind. It's fascinating - for the children as well as the adults, for the facts stated in it are not common knowledge that is easily obtained, but a product of extensive research, outlined in a comprehensive and assesible manner. The artwork is simply splendid! It is colorful, which would most certainly appeal to the children, but it is also educational and realistic and may be helpful to teenagers and even adults. The paper engineering composing the book is simply unique. It allows it to be Child's play, as well as the educational instrument. Applause to Mr. Arthur J. L'Hommendieu!
