From Publishers Weekly

Despite the predicted Final War, David Bennet and his parents have remained on Earth while most families have departed for more stable planets. As one of the few children left, David is regularly sent to foster families so adults can experience the joys of parenting. One wealthy and powerful foster parent, Lady Anastasia Grey, has a maniacal plot: to adopt hundreds of foster children so she can create a master race of the future. When David is assigned to Lady Grey, he realizes something is dreadfully wrong: Lady Grey is capable of manipulating time so that her adopted children don't grow any older. While David knows there is little chance of escape, he realizes he must be alert and watchful if he hopes to understand Lady Grey's plan. And when the Final War does come, the boy is prepared. As in her debut novel, The First Battle of Morn , Moulton's vivid imagination has produced a complex and believable society in which people are in conflict not only with themselves but with their future as well. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-8 --This imaginative, exciting, but somewhat convoluted science-fiction story presents a view of a futuristic computer-controlled Earth on the verge of a world war, as well as the Earth after the war. David Bennet, 16, is one of the few young people left on Earth in a society watched over by Guardian computers which control every aspect of life. David's father is one of the last holdouts remaining on Earth in an attempt to fight against an impending world war. When the boy is adopted, supposedly for one month, by a wealthy and mysterious Lady Grey, he never again sees his parents, for Lady Grey has assembled a group of children who will be trained to survive on Earth after the predicted war. In a castle which evokes images of a setting for Flash Gordon, Lady Grey demands total subservience from her captives as they are trained in survival skills by her evil assistant, Sarke. In a scene reminiscent of both Star Wars and Flash Gordon, David tries to rescue his love, Princess Irene, from a marriage to the evil Sarke. Irene recovers her precious secret treasures, uncontaminated seeds, from the dying Lady Grey, and begins a new life and new world with David. Although readers may find some of the characters and situations melodramatic, and may find it unsatisfying that David never sees his parents again, this is a fast-moving tale which presents some frightening possibilities for the future that even reluctant readers might want to consider. --Yvonne A. 5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, March 4, 2003

The first time I read this book, I was in fifth or sixth grade. I absolutely fell in love with it!! I'm almost twenty-four now, and I would still recommend it to all ages. Even if the language is geared for the younger generation, it's a story that anyone can appreciate. I wish more authors had Deborah Multon's class of writing!!
