Book Description

November 1, 1995
With "Covenant with the Vampire", Jeanne Kalogridis launched a thrilling new vampire trilogy that takes on one of the most intriguing horror classics of all time - Bram Stoker's "Dracula". Haunting, sensuous, and compulsively listenable, this debut novel was published to critical acclaim, and established Kalogridis as a writer to be reckoned with in vampire fiction. Now "Children of the Vampire", the dark and stylishly erotic second book in the series, delves even deeper into the terrifying mysteries behind Dracula.

It is Amsterdam, 1871, twenty-five years before the start of Stoker's novel, and twenty-five years following Arkady Tsepesh's flight from his family's ancestral castle with his wife and young son, Stefan, after learning that he and his family are bound by an ancient covenant to serve their ancestor, Prince Vlad Tsepesh - Dracula. Now a vampire, Arkady has tried to break the covenant and failed. Separated from his beloved wife and son, he has one all-consuming desire - to destroy Vlad before he draws son Stefan into eternal service through the blood ritual. He tracks Vlad and his kidnapped son to Transylvania as he seeks to free his family and put an end to the terrible covenant - even if it means he must destroy his own son.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Both a prequel to Bram Stoker's Dracula and a sequel to Kalogridis's own Covenant with the Vampire (1994), this second novel in a projected trilogy suffers by comparison to both. Arkady Tsepesh, the protagonist of Covenant, flees the castle of his great-granduncle, Vlad, Count Dracula, but he can't elude the influence of the vampire bite that has bound him to his sire, as it has the firstborn male of each generation of Tsepeshs for the past four centuries. Meanwhile, Arkady's wife, Mary, who has given her husband up for dead, moves to Amsterdam and marries Doctor Jan Van Helsing. Neither Stefan, her son by Arkady, nor Abraham, whom the Van Helsings have adopted, have reason to suspect they are not blood brothers until the family curse draws Stefan to Vlad's castle in Transylvania. Gratuitous scenes of sex and violence perpetrated by the merciless Vlad and Arkady's hedonistic vampire sister, Zsuzsanna, fail to alleviate the tedium of the narrative, told in diary format through a number of voices. Notwithstanding its occasional plot twists, this novel does little more than rehash the plot elements of Covenant with the Vampire while setting the stage for events that will occur in the last book in the series. The second book in a vampire trilogy from the acclaimed author of Covenant With The Vampire, Children Of The Vampire is a dark, stylishly erotic prequel to Bram Stoker's Dracula; it is the haunting tale of a struggle to end Dracula's control over his human descendants. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read - You'll Enjoy!, May 3, 2003
By
Aubrey (Jasper, Texas USA) - See all my reviews
"Children of the Vampire" is the second in the trilogy of "The Diaries of the Family Dracul". "Covenant With the Vampire" is the first book is and the third and final book is "Lord of the Vampires" The reason I mentioned the other novels is because they should be read to get the whole and entire story. All are highly engrossing and interesting. How Ms Kalogridis thought up all this is beyond me - but she is obviously talented. Although all the books are wonderful reads - be prepared - there are strange situations in the books - among them are incest and homosexuality. The books don't go into to much "intimate" details on these subjects - and they're not something that carries on into the complete story. So the squeamish should tolerate them just fine. Therefore, I would advise anyone who likes vampire novels to purchase all three of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Ocerwhelming, March 16, 2002

I first read Kalogridis' work in the burning times, and found it interesting, however for the diaries of the family dracul, i must say is astonishing. Each page goes by instantly and you can do little but keep on reading, and even after the first book is gone, your mind is so entangled in the plot you just have to keep reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, but not excellent, April 30, 1998
By A Customer
Children of the Vampire is, with no doubt, a good horror book, telling with a subject that perhaps is somehow abused; anyway J.Kalogridis was able to capture the reader's interest thank to her skill of describing vivid, almost real scenes. If you read it, you won't dislike it, even if, in my humble opinion Covenant with the Vampire was far better than this one; in fact I think the plot of Children of Vampire does not match the expectations of the most of readers because it seems a bit too...weak, as if the author had been compelled to write extra-pages for economic reasons and so she had not payed enough attention to the general framework of her book. In a few words, a good work, as to style and atmosphere, but not fantastic just like the first of the trilogy.
