Book Description

To download free eBooks directly, you must use Kindle Fire. Amazon has changed their other Kindle reader software (PaperWhite, eInk and Touch) so those users must use this eBook in Amazon's downloadable Cloud Reader ( on a PC or laptop to select and send the free classics to their Kindle. iPad users must use the Cloud Reader from "Manage Your Kindle" to use the download links, see "From The Author" below. Amazon Prime members are welcome to use their free monthly borrow to get this list and download hundreds of the free children's classics for future reading.

I read hundreds of the books from this linked list as a kid, both from my father's old collection and from second-hand bookstores. I tried to include all of the classics for kids that are available for free through Amazon, and also concentrated on the series type books I remember so well. Approximately a quarter of the 1000+ listed books are part of series, and these I list by series as well as by author.

Many of the book series in this list were composed by various authors under a single pseudonym, such as Victor Appleton for the Tom Swift series. I use the pen names in favor of real names since that's the only way most of us recognize these books. Some women, like Mary Louisa Molesworth, chose to published under their husband's name, so that "Mrs. Molesworth" was the name on the books, and that's how I list them.

Amazon recently pulled some popular titles for bad formatting, including: "Anne of Green Gables", "Kim" and "The Count of Monte Cristo." So before you complain to Amazon about the formatting of a free eBook, keep in mind that sometimes, poor formatting is better than nothing.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

If you read this eBook on your iPad in the Kindle app, you'll find that clicking the links to download free books produces an "Operation not supported" error. The work-around is to go to the Amazon website in your iPad Safari web browser and log into your Amazon account. At the upper right of the screen where it says "Welcome (your name), Your Account" with a little down arrow, click the arrow for the drop-down list and choose "Manage Your Content and Devices."

The new-look "Manage Your Content and Devices" on iPad shows all of the book covers in your library. Choose this book, tap the "more actions" button followed by "read now." This starts the Amazon Cloud Reader and you'll be able to read the eBook and use the links the same as if you owned an Amazon Fire.

The instructions above may sound complicated, but after you do it the first time, you'll find it goes 1-2-3.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have found all kinds of books September 12, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
sure you can find these books other ways but this book gives you active links on the kindle that take you right to the store to download a book for free. My 10 year old grandson has been using it on his Kindle to find books he never knew existed. The price of 99cents for this book is a true bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for FREE Children's Classics! January 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is WELL worth the investment! The author has compiled a list of public domain children's classics, ie: Little Women, The Wizard of Oz, Bobbsey Twins books, Anne of Green Gables, Elsie Dinsmore, etc. They are linked to the Amazon website where you may download the free version. The author states that occasionally a link becomes broken, but he provides his email address so that he can correct the link! Every link I clicked on from my Kindle worked and took me directly to the website. He has links organzied by series or author. As I browsed through, I remembered many books that I read as a child or young teen. I am going to love having easy access to such a great resource for free classic reading for my children!

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are using the 3G version of the Kindle Touch, you must have the WIRELESS or WI-FI turned on to access these links. The 3G Experimental Browser on the Kindle Touch does not allow access to the regular Amazon website. If you have the WI-Fi turned on, you will have no problem purchasing your free books!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a super good resource! January 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is loaded with links to classic children's and young adult's literature. It's fun knowing all the authors that are available in the public domain and the number of books that they produced. It is a wonderful resource even without the direct links to access the books.
