Childrens' Hospital Season 2 - Available Formats

Editorial Reviews

Transitioning from the Internet to television, Children's Hospital is a new comedy series created by Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) -- and featuring an all-star cast -- that lampoons the medical show genre by exploring the emotional struggles and sexual politics of a group of doctors with supercharged libidos. The dedication of these doctors to their personal lives is relentless -- and is interrupted only by the occasional need to treat sick children. No medical condition is too severe to distract these oblivious physicians from their primal need to flirt, gossip, make out, talk about sex, show their underwear and more, all in front of horrified children and their anxious parents. The new series is based upon the Webby Award-winning digital show that debuted on TheWB.com in 2008 and quickly became a Web hit with its twisted take on network medical dramas like Grey's Anatomy and House. Check into the hospital!

Ah, medical dramas -- they're basically soap operas for people who don't want to admit they're watching soap operas.

And it's about time somebody spoofed them the way they deserve. "Childrens Hospital - Complete 1st & 2nd Seasons" mocks the soapy storylines and over-the-top melodrama of these medical shows, and never once removes its tongue from its cheek. It's immature, silly, and wonderfully offensive -- seriously, if you are a politically correct person DO NOT WATCH!

"Childrens Hospital" is a hospital founded by Dr. Arthur Childrens, supervised by an alluringly handicapped Chief and populated by several attractive doctors. These doctors spend most of their time wandering the halls having "profound" thoughts, making out in front of patients, and occasionally messing around in the operating room.

The first season has an interesting collection of stories: Dr. Lola Spratt (Erinn Hayes) pretends to have a brain tumor, which quickly spirals out of control; sexy Dr. Cat Black (Lake Bell) who has a torrid affair with a six-year-old suffering from Advanced Aging Disease; and clown doctor Blake becomes obsessed with curing people with the power of laughter.

In the second season, the hospital has a new administrator, Sy Mittleman, who is hated by everyone except the Chief (who is hot for him), and a sexy new doctor. The staff is rocked by deadly childbirth, a return from the dead, missing siblings, nerd affairs, a sensual rabbi, a sexual heat wave, Take Your Daughter To Work Day, and Big Pharma threatening Glenn after he learns that butterfly fluid can cure cancer.

"Childrens Hospital" started as a series of low-budget webisodes, which since got turned into an actual series on Adult Swim. While the first season -- which are actually the webisodes -- is a bit choppy at times, the series really flowers when each episode expands to eleven whole minutes. This is just delightful.

The writers constantly mock the sexed-up, melodramatic nature of medical dramas. Every episode opens with a "previously on" and a pompous monologue ("Love... why is it not in and of itself, in and out? I should have my own podcast"), followed by wacky medical dilemmas (a sultan's severed finger!) and melodramatic ethical dilemmas (should Lola abort a sixteen-year-old boy?).

When they aren't making fun of medical dramas, they're making fun of the medical profession in general ("So you're saying that outside of being punctured by a large knife, Noah's had no unusual symptoms?"). And the actors look like they're having a wonderful time -- they play such gloriously selfish, nasty, childish characters who really don't care about any of their patients.

"Childrens Hospital - Complete First and Second Seasons" is a delightfully immature, un-PC, wacky little show that pokes the medical profession -- and medical dramas -- full of holes. Begone, ghost Lola!

There is almost no way to adequately describe the savage and spot-on satire that comprises the delightfully insane "Childrens Hospital." There are pleasant shows that you love and you watch with regularity--but every once in a while, something so diabolically and deliciously wrong headed pops up. This is one of those shows! I can assure you that everyone in my immediate circle of friends was turned onto this madness by my enthusiastic rantings! And to a man and woman, everyone joined the cult! This DVD collection contains both the ten original web episodes that made the show an Internet sensation (dubiously labeled Season One--they were combined and re-broadcast as five episodes for TV) as well as the twelve shows produced for the Cartoon Network (more appropriately called Season Two). I think, however, it is prudent to clear up any questions with some definitions. As the original incarnation of the show was on the web--each episode clocks in at roughly five minutes. That's right, you can plow through the so-called first season in about an hour with bathroom and cocktail breaks. In the second season, the one that was actually made for television, each show runs approximately ten to twelve minutes. I wanted to clear up expectations--these are NOT regular TV seasons!

With that warning out of the way, all I can say is that these snippets of hilarity contain more actual laughs in their brief running time than most standard length sitcoms will in much longer airings. "Childrens Hospital," for the uninitiated, is a broad spoof of every medical drama you've ever seen. Episodes are highlighted by a philosophical narration (think "Grey's Anatomy") that ponders life, death, love and other absurdities though the lens of narcissism and selfishness. Rob Corddry, a comedian who I have been relatively ambivalent about in the past, is the show's creator and plays one of its most inspired characters. As Dr. Blake Downs, Corddry appears in full clown make-up (think a funny Patch Adams) and uses only laughter (not surgery) to cure (or kill) his patients. He surrounds himself with a stable of terrific actors. Megan Mullallay (a great Carrie Weaver of "ER" parody), Erinn Hayes, Rob Huebel, Ken Marino, Malin Akerman, Lake Bell, Ed Helms, David Wain, Henry Winkler, Nick Offerman, and even Michael Cera's voice all lend great comic support. In addition to these great and gifted talents, there are some big name surprises as well--I won't spoil the terrific cameos!

The show itself is pure soap opera mayhem. The sexed-up staff of this hospital clearly take their inspiration most directly from "Grey's Anatomy". This parody is stuffed with every illicit, illegal, and immoral romantic entanglement you can imagine. When not bedding one another, the requisite wacky medical cases are abundant and appropriately ludicrous. But I like when the show tries for importance and poignancy and absolutely skewers its subject matter. In truth, the humor can be unapologetically brutal and political correctness has no place. I suspect this could be off-putting to more sensitive viewers--and I think that if someone does dislike the show, they will REALLY dislike it! For me, however, it was pure magic. From the "previously on" lunacy that punctuates the beginning of each episode to Cera's public address announcer closing on the credits, never has doing wrong felt so right! The DVD release promises an hour of previously unseen footage--plus there are plenty of hilarious mock interviews, commercials, etc..available that will undoubtedly make the cut as well. Feeling adventurous? Check into the hospital! KGHarris, 2/11.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Let's ask shim how...herrrim...sees hermself...herm." December 9, 2011

This is a very funny show, practically surreal in its weirdness. The season 2 finale, titled "The Sultan's Finger: Live," was set up like a live broadcast in which everything that could go wrong very much did. It reminded me of the first episode of the David Lynch show "On The Air." Just great.

Pretty good, almost too ridiculous though. And geared for short attention spans...episodes seem like they are about 5 minutes long, if that.
