This review is from: The Childrens Mushroom Garden- Indoor Growing Kit- Great Gift Idea: Educational learning toy or science project. Grow Edible Enokitake Mushrooms. (Kitchen)
Had a lot of fun with the enokitake kit, it is very fascinating. I keep the canister at my desk at work (you know the joke about engineers being like mushrooms....). The office is too dark and cold for plants, but an OK place for these mushrooms. My co-workers think it's hilarious and routinely ask to see how it (and another kit) are doing. The kit has no smell, and can be closed in it's canister for a few days when necessary.
I received the kit and thought it was rotten initially. I wrote the company about the condition and they responded cheerfully that that is correct and how the kit is supposed to look, best described as a canister of freaky-looking fuzzy wood-cheese. From there, I started trying to care for the kit. The initial triggering did nothing. The kit was eventually triggered a month later by an unusually cold day at the office. Kit was fairly low maintenance until the first flush of mushrooms started. But, the mushrooms dried out after not being watered for several days and had to be removed. I re-triggered a second time by leaving them outside on a cold day and the second flush looks great. You may get multiple attempts to practice with this kit. I recommend keeping the shipping box so the kit can be taken home for care over a long weekend. Two and a half-months later the kit is still growing. Once the kit is exhausted, I intend to distribute parts to co-workers to start their own 'mycelium networks'. Only reason the kit didn't get five stars are poor documentation (a two sided black and white photo copy) and the kit grew much slower than expected. Had a lot to learn from the tech support and Wikipedia, but that is kind of the point. I highly recommend this kit.
