I bought this on a whim for my 7-year-old daughter, because she loves anything with wolves or puppies. I was afraid it might be too young for her but figured what the heck. She LOVED it! She raved about how much she loved the pictures and how great the story was--then she read it again several more times. It's one of her new favorites for killing time on my Kindle. I recommend it!

This is a story about an inquisitive little wolf cub called Rugmo, who is eager to know just what lies on the other side of the fence surrounding the reservation he and his family live on. "Nothing a wolf needs" his mother had said. Inevitably, the occasion arises when Rugmo spots a hole in the same fence. Despite his mother's previous warning, Rugmo, unable to resist the challenge of the unknown, courageously squeezes through the gap and his adventure begins. In a very short space of time he experiences hunger, friendship and danger, and realises that, although he is having a very exciting time, home may well be the better place to be.
This is a nice little story and very well-written, and the illustrations are endearing. There is an illustration on every page enabling very young children to follow the story quite easily. Once hooked, the story's message is not hard to understand either; listen to your parents - they know the dangers out there in the `real' world! The message also fosters daring and inquisitiveness - which is also a good thing. The ending was a surprise; I didn't expect that, it was really sweet.
Nice story-telling and great pictures along with a clear message make this a solid 4 star read.

Very exciting story! My 6 year old daughter was riveted the entire time. Great illustrations. Brings awareness to wolves being an endangered species.

A pleasingly perfect bedtime book for kids of all ages; elevating and entertaining. Rachel Yu is one of my very favorite children book authors. In her stories, she beautifully blends a moral lesson and some general knowledge with a delightfully entertaining plot. This book is an example of just that! Not only do the kids learn the basic lesson of what friendship means and how not obeying parents can lead to dangerous situations, they also find out the living habits of wolves and hawks-all in an engaging story form that holds and develops their interest in learning more about nature and how different creatures live and communicate.

The story is intriguing with a lusciously amusing end. Loved and enjoyed it as much as my kids did. I have found few children authors as good as Rachel Yu.

The story of Rugmo the young pup ready to venture beyond the familiar borders and brazenly enter uncharted territory, is completely gripping. It embodies everything a child should have, bravery, curiosity, etc. It goes on to demonstrate that it is best to obey your parents. The selection of the wolf, canis lupis, is absolutely perfect and any other animal would have detracted from the story. Not to say that the writing was not top notch as I've come to expect from the young Miss Yu or that the imagery was not moving. I would recommend all of the books by Rachel Yu.
