Biography

Born Armando Anthony Corea in Chelsea, Massachusetts on June 12, 1941, he began studying piano at age four. Early on in his development, Horace Silver and Bud Powell were important influences while the music of Beethoven and Mozart inspired his compositional instincts. Chick’s first major professional gig was with Cab Calloway, which came before early stints in Latin bands led by Mongo Santamaria… Read more in Amazon's Chick Corea Store

5.0 out of 5 stars a colllection of immensely creative piano works, June 6, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Children's Songs (Audio CD)
Funny how this recording grows on you over time. I have heard this often over the years and now for the last month have been listening to it almost daily. I feel (as another reviewer did) that in a hundred years, this may turn out to be one of the the best classical works of the late 20th century, even if it appears to be jazz-threaded. Its as good an 'existential' expression of the times as were the Chopin nocturnes, or the piano version of the Ravel Mother Goose Suite, or the Eric Satie solo piano classics. If you are moved by those pieces, you will indeed like these. These works by Chick are pensive, profound, lyrical. And after 19 piano solos comes the Addendum for Violin, Cello and Piano which is a terrific classically modelled trio.

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC, August 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Children's Songs (Audio CD)
Everytime I hear this disc I am reminded how amazing the human species is. Just when it seems we have defeated the mountain someone goes higher. Chick is one of the finest composers of our time ! I believe in say, One hundred years they will look back on the music from our era and Chick Corea will be held as one of the greats. From his awe inspiring "Return to Forever" project to "Concerto" Chick has hit all of the intellectual high ground while all the time maintaining plenty of emotion and feeling, Not to mention Technique! CHILDRENS SONGS is a beautiful collection of short musical stories...the title would imply a simple structure but nothing could be farther from the truth. These compositions bristle with fresh and almost child like energy and emotion (hence the title I would imagine)and as always leave the listner touched and wanting more...BUY IT !

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully crafted songs and piano voicings, September 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Children's Songs (Audio CD)
Give it all the stars !! Like Gershwin preludes or Chopin nocturnes, Corea's songs are deceptive in their simplicity. I hear something new in each hearing. Having listened to some of these songs first with Corea's duets with vibes player Gary Burton (dense in texture but equally wonderful), I think that the solo piano versions bare the "bones" of these lovely compostions. Certainly will find a place in Jazz/20th Century classical repertoire. I wonder how lovely these songs would sound if arranged for two classical guitars. (has it been done?)
