Fantastic for kids and non-native English speakers,
By
This review is from: The Children's Step-by-Step Cookbook (Hardcover)
I originally bought this book for a Vietnamese friend whose English is not very good. She wanted to teach her 11-year old daughter how to cook "American" food, but wasn't familiar with it. This book is perfect for both of them. For example, the ingredients are shown with a picture of the food item as well as quantity. So if the recipe calls for zucchini, there is a picture of zucchini - this allows my friend to do the grocery shopping (she knows zucchini in Vietnamese but not in English). It also includes an illustrated glossary at the back to help with terms such as "simmer." I was so impressed with this book that I ordered one for myself, as well as Angela Wilkes' Children's Quick And Easy Cookbook for when my grandkids are old enough to use it! (Okay, the truth - I want to make some of the recipes now!)

I bought this book for my 9 year old grandson and now he plans to be a chef in his own restaurant. He loves the recipes and we love to share the meals he prepares. The photos are very good and allows children to whet their appetites. The directions are clear and easy to follow. I plan to buy this for other friends who are grandparents so they, too, can give it to their grandchildren.

The Childrens step by step Cook Book.,

This review is from: The Children's Step-by-Step Cookbook (Hardcover)
I got this book about two years ago and gave it to my two grandaughters who live beside us. They found the book to have wonderful illustrations of the amounts measured and of the ingredients very easy to use. The receipes turned out to be very good and consistent. The two girls have grown in confidence and have they cooked crepes for me for a party of ten people. I was very proud of them but better still they were proud of themselves. They have gone on to cook there own birthday cakes and make sunday breakfasts. I have just bought another of the same book for another grandaughter and still have two families to buy the same book for the girls. It is a FANTASTIC BOOK. All four sets of my grandchildren will eventually have there own and pass it on to there children. Angela Thompson.

Above All Others,

My six year old son couldn't wait to get started making gingerbread from this book. He assembled all equipment needed from the photos provided for each recipe. I've looked at other children's cookbooks and this is above the others in being extremely well thought out in every detail. We haven't tried any other recipes yet but can't wait to!!!

not for the beginner,

I was looking for a cookbook that introduced cooking with simple recipes like french toast or scrambled eggs. Forget this book. It had ingredients like mascarpone(?) and used measurement terms like "scant". It had lemon cheesecake and souffle as a couple of recipes. That was a little too advanced for someone starting out. It only received two stars from me for the big bold colors and very clear pictures. Still, how do I explain a scant and a mascarpone to my 7 year old? So, I picked up the book thinking the big pictures and primary colors would also have basic simple recipes, but it clearly does not. This is probably good for an older child who has experience in cooking already.

My kids love to prepare the dishes from this book, the recipes are simple enough and the results are delicious! By the way, scant is slightly less than a pinch, but who cares?

My daughters (15 & 10) have been cooking with this book for 5 years and they love it. This copy is a gift for a friend who likes to cook.
Using this book is a really wonderful way to learn about cooking. It has pictues and explainations of every step of every proceedure, even the most basic. It asumes that you know nothing and builds up from there. Each recipe is fully illustrated and described. Every ingredient and preparation is shown, as is a photo of the completed dish. They can cook without me and feel confident. All I have to do is shop and show them where the tools are!

My mom was big into DK books when my brothers and I were young... we had TONS of them. This book was great, my older brother and I never had any problems with the recipes in there, they are great! In fact, my youngest brother (who has been obsessed with food since birth) taught himself to read with this cookbook by matching the words to the foods he liked.
I'm looking forward to buying another copy to share with my two and a half year old son (and eventually, with the second baby on the way). I highly recommend, both as a child who'd used it before myself AND as a parent of young kids!

First of all, I agree that adult supervision is needed. Having said that, this is an AMAZING Cookbook! Every recipe we have made actually worked and tasted Great ! I was a pastry chef for 5 years and was amazed at their authentic crepe recipe! It explains how to make the best scrambled eggs ever (hint: use LOW heat and stir often). And the "cowboy bean bake" is absolutely delicious ! It's true that you will have to lend your child a hand but this is a FAMILY cookbook that you can treasure together ! We can't wait to try the other rcipes !

The cookbook is what we wanted, but we did not know that it was being sent from England. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but with a cookbook, all of the measurements are metric and even some food names are different. I wish the seller (World of Books) would have indicated where it was being sent from so we could have purchased it from a distributor who deals only in the US.
