This is a great map because for nearly every country, there is at least one icon of something famous from the area - an animal, building, person, plant, etc. This gives an extra level of geographical information that most maps don't provide, but it also makes it easy for kids to learn countries through association. I bought this map a couple of weeks ago and it's been on my 5 year old's wall since then - he learns a new country or two every night, and the associations make it easy. For example, he knows Norway has a viking ("that's a bad guy") in it, and when I ask where Spain is, he says "there's a bull fighter in Spain" and goes right to it. Or, if he doesn't remember where Australia is right away, I can say "there are kangaroos in Australia" and he remembers the kangaroo icons and finds Australia right away.

There is a key on the bottom left of the map identifying each icon, and along the top of the map there is a display of the planets in the solar system (no Pluto, how modern!).

Some of the other maps I've seen have the geographical icons displayed, but this one has the icons, colored countries so it's easier for children to see political boundaries, and geographical texturing so it's easy to see where there are mountains. The lamination is high quality and the map feels like it will last. This map has it all!

This map is not laminated!!!!!! It is on glossy photo paper. Very easily ripped! A complete waste if you need to use this for a classroom or with children. The map cost me $45 at Fedex Kinkos to laminate. Also Staples and Office Depot didn't even have a machine big enough to laminate this map. A lot of driving around! Not worth it. Buy a different map. You'll save a lot of money!

I researched children's maps carefully. I didn't want something inaccurate, or filled with tacky, sexist, or violent images of other cultures. This map has hundreds of fun details, but it's tasteful and intelligent. It also includes rivers, mountains, borders, and other detailed information, not just major capitals like on some maps.

The paper is very thick, and nicely glossy. I put it on my son's wall with two-sided removable poster tape. It's held up really well. My kids look at it and reference it all the time. I highly recommend this map.

Be careful when ordering this item. It's not laminated and will be susceptible to damage from markers, frequent handling, etc. To call it laminated is very misleading!

I read these reviews before I bought this map. I must agree with the previous poster that the map is definitely not laminated. Instead it is more like photo paper. It's still slick and could probably be written on with a dry erase marker (although I haven't tried it) but it could easily be torn. In fact, a piece of packing tape got stuck to the back as I was unrolling it and tore a little piece of paper off.

Having said that, I still give the map a four because of it's captivating drawings and clear country lines.

(I will probably have it laminated though.) :)

I ordered this map for my 6 year old grandson. I looked at a few different maps and read the reviews, including ones saying map is not laminated.
After reading item name (Map, laminated) and the description that also says it is laminated in plastic, I decided they must have changed the product, and I placed the order. It was sent to him in California, and I did not see it until sometime later. I was very surprised and disappointed. I give it 1 star as it is a map, but it is clearly not laminated. It is glossy paper with no plastic. This is just false advertising.

I bought a beautiful kids map of the United States from Amazon earlier for about $20. It's big and luxurious.
So I thought this world map would be the same quality and size. It's not. It's about half the size of the United States map.
Also, as indicated in earlier reviews, it's not laminated. and it's already slightly ripped.
Now, it's not a bad map. My kids seem to like it. (Hence a 3 star instead of 1 or 2). But it's just not worth $20. You can purchase a much bigger map for $13 from Rand McNally, also from Amazon.

I should have taken out a ruler and figure out exactly how big it is, before purchasing. So buyer beware.
