While the internet provides writers with almost everything they need to succeed, there is still nothing to be found online that compares to this essential guide. 3.0 out of 5 stars Good sources, but SO much outdated content!
The high number of defunct addresses, web addresses, email addresses, and contact names suggests that the team overseeing this directory either doesn't validate often enough or allows any Tom, Dick, or Harry with a fly-by-night operation to include his information.

On the other hand, the content that is valid is valuable.

Each year, Alice Pope and her crew deliver the goods, by scouring the publishing world for book, magazine and multimedia publishers that accept work from children's writers. Trust me, every successful agent and submitting author in the children's book field has a dog-eared copy of this book on the shelf. Plus, the articles that accompany the listings are of invariably high quality. A must-have.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Guide out there!, September 16, 2008
I am a publisher author and illustrator, and I know first hand that this book works! How? Because it helped me to get where I am today! I have writers and illustrators asking me all the time how to get published, and I always direct them to this book. If you are a serious writer or illustrator, you NEED this book - not only does it have the names and addresses of countless publishers, it also has invaluable tips, and how-to's on everything from writing a query letter, to website design. I buy it every year, even though I no longer need it. I've purchased other "How to get published books" in the past, and none of them hold a candle to this one! Stop thinking about it and buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really helpful for a first time writer, September 6, 2008
This book has a wealth of information and is so much more than just a list of publishers. There are tips on what and how to submit a manuscript and interviews with first time writers. I am very happy that I purchased this book.

Some good articles, especially regarding things like query letters, and of course, the listings that make researching much easier.

4.0 out of 5 stars Be sure to check the websites!, March 23, 2009

The book has great contact information and general guidelines, but BE SURE TO CHECK THE WEBSITES. Many publishers post 'no longer accepting submission' messages on their websites, and you may as well save the postage and effort, regardless of what the book says. As publications like this are static, it's best to research for events that outdate what has been printed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference!!, October 24, 2008
This is a really great book full of a ton of helpful advice. I really like to write and people have been telling me for years that I should try to publish the kids' books I write for my sister. The Scholastic website recommended this book and I'm so glad I got it because I had no idea all the different elements there were to consider when publishing a book! The only thing is that after I read this book I felt a little depressed at the prospect of getting my book published. This book definitely doesn't give you false hopes, LOL!! But at least they present a realistic view.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good starting point resource, April 8, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Great resource for the aspiring writer. However, by publication time, the info as to whether or not publishers are accepting submissions can be out of date. Do yourself a favor and check the publisher website for any updated submission guidelines. Often there is additional information available there that is essential for a successful submission. Or you may miss out on an opportunity, where the book says the publisher isn't accepting submissions, but the website (which is more recent info) indicates submissions are being accepted. I enjoyed the articles interspersed throughout the directory pages. I still use this book as a starting point.

5.0 out of 5 stars Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market, June 16, 2009

This book was great for me because I am a first time publisher. It helps me know where to begin and helps motivate me to do more. Since I'm not an artist, I didn't know not to find the illustrator myself before submitting! It gives so many suggestions for a good procedure to follow as to not waste time sending your manuscript to places that will reject it because they don't publish that type. It gives you a sensible plan to follow, a guide to a logical, more successful plan for someone like me that is just starting on this adventure. I also like reading about other writers, organizations to join, and a long list of publishers where to send your work. This has been a basic resource book and with all the websites listed in the book, a lead to many more resources to follow. I would recommend it to anyone and actually, I have to lots of people who have seen me reading it! L.J. Krustchinsky, Houston, Texas
