An essential annual guide for children's book writers and illustrators,
By
This review is from: Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market (Paperback)
This review is condensed from a review I wrote on my web site, The Purple Crayon.
Children's Writer's and Illustrator's Market, also known as "CWIM," includes an annually updated "yellow pages" of book, magazine, and other publishers, information about conferences and agents, basic how-to information, and interesting feature articles. Contents: The bulk of CWIM is taken up by the Markets section. This provides information about publishers of books, magazines, greeting cards, and plays. There are several profiles of industry "insiders" scattered through, including editor Deborah Brodie and writer Amy Timberlake. There are several hundred individual entries in all. The book publishers section has about 200 entries. I counted 22 marked as "new," including new companies and new imprints at established companies. (A few are companies that have been around a while but haven't been in CWIM before.) There is also a small section of Canadian and international companies. The entries vary in length, but always include addresses and other basics. Indexes help you find publishers by subject as well as name. The first part of the book has articles, some of which present the same basic information for people just getting started every year, followed by 12 all-new articles and five "First Books" profiles. Comments: Though I like the feature articles, the reason to get CWIM every year is the Markets section. The editors attempt to update every publisher listing every year. What they print is almost always accurate, and saves anyone who needs information about children's publishers an enormous amount of time and effort.

"2006 Children's Writers & Illustrators Market" is an excellent resource for beginning writers and illustrators who are interested in breaking into the children's publishing market. It's also a handy guide for those of us who are already working in the field and are anxious to learn more. In addition to providing detailed listings of different publishing companies and their target markets, this book also offers profiles on literary agents, suggestions on how to pitch a manuscript, and interviews with successful children's authors and illustrators. I think it would be nice if the book offered more detailed information on query letters and book proposals for readers who are just starting out, but the publishers of this book really want you to go out and purchase the original "Writer's Market" and the "Guide to Literary Agents," which offer additional guidelines and resources. Overall, "2006 Children's Writers & Illustrators Market" is an essential tool for anyone who is remotely interested in children's publishing. The guide is updated every year and it's worth shelling out the money for a new copy every summer.

This review is from: Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market (Paperback)
This is well-organized and has all of the information one would need to access publishers. Agents and publicists, as well as writers, need to have this "encyclopedia" of resources. There is a wealth of information needed for sending book proposals and manuscripts. Just excellent!

The Most Important Tool for the Children's Book Genre,
This review is from: Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market (Paperback)
Professionals in the children's book genre have been relying on the yearly Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market for 18 years. This guide covers everything writers and/or illustrators would ever need to find a home for their work.
The 2006 edition contains more than 800 listings of opportunities. Book publishers, magazine opportunities, literary agents, contests and conferences are just a few of the numerous types of listings you get in 400+ pages. Each listing is updated yearly to make sure the contact information, pay rates and specific publishing needs are accurate. Editors of the guide generally work all year long to ensure the listings are up-to-date. What makes this guide even more valuable are the articles, interviews and also help for those just getting started in the business. The guide could simply be a compilation of listings and it would be a great investment but the fact that these other resources are added make it a powerful tool for any writer or illustrator's career. If you're searching for markets on your own, you're wasting precious time. The 2006 Writer's & Illustrator's Market does the tedious work for you so you can simply choose an appropriate market and find a publishing outlet for your work.

This review is from: Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market (Paperback)
This book gave me a good perspective on what it takes to "try" to get a children's book published. I really feel like I have a better grasp on the reality of writing children's books...it's not as easy as I had first expected!

If you want to write for kids, there's two things you need to do (i.e., other than writing your book!): join SCWBI and get this book. The book is full of great advice and contacts. A must-have for all children's writers.
