Book Description

January 1, 2002 1586830627 978-1586830625

This title's easy-to-use format provides access to the sometimes difficult-to-find resources for youth written by Latino authors. The author has included complete bibliographic information for a variety of titles in various genres including novels, chapter books, short stories, folklore, drama, poetry, and nonfiction. A list of additional resource materials, as well as publisher information and an index is also included. For each book, complete bibliographic information is included, as well as a list of editions, a summary, interest and reading levels, test availability in Accelerated Reader and Reading Counts, awards and a list of reviews. Library media specialists and teachers can use Latino-authored literature to enrich the learning process in individual classes and to engage others in cross-curricular lessons that encourage broader thinking and critical thinking.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

This publication fills a necessary void for professionals looking for all forms of Latino literature for primary grades through high school. Chapters include novels, short stories, folklore, drama, poetry, nonfiction, and resource materials (including videotapes and Web sites). York provides complete bibliographic citations for each book listed. Nonfiction is listed by Dewey number. One section lists Latino writers and their Web sites. Two appendixes include publishers of Latino material and "Nearly Latinos"-writers and storytellers who might be categorized as such. This book should provide the framework for building a solid collection.

More About the Author

Sherry York is a retired school librarian and teacher from Texas. The author of six books on multicultural literature, she divides her time between rural west Texas and a village in the mountains of New Mexico.

An advocate of multicultural literature, Sherry has been a book reviewer, book judge, editor, and conference presenter. She loves to read, especially mysteries and memoirs.

When she is in residence in her cozy cabin in New Mexico, she enjoys meeting with a book discussion group and a book club at the local public library. A member of a writers' group, she is writing her memoir, working with a young Cambodian man who is writing about his life, looking forward to editing the memoir of another member of her writers' group, and is encouraging several friends and acquaintances to write their stories.

Sherry is interested in biofeedback, healing, psychic communication, Jewish American history, crypto Jews or "conversos" and the history of various cultural groups in the United States.
