Gr. 2-4. This introduction to California focuses on sights and activities of particular interest to children. Despite the obligatory images of sun and surf, the book also emphasizes the state's diversity and contrasts. Sights range from Yosemite and Death Valley to Legoland and the Exploratorium. The rosy, promotional tone reads like a tourist brochure, and though the book does mention endangered animals, the state's problems are ignored. The crisp captioned photographs speak eloquently about California, and most feature a diversity of young people. Almost 500 years of California history are compressed into the two final pages. A flawed but acceptable map and a glossary are also included, but state symbols are not. Glossy and enthusiastic, this gives young children a cheerful but superficial first impression of the "Golden State." Linda Perkins
