Just wish they had the lyrics printed in the jacket,

Love this cd -- it's lots of fun to listen to, the music is enjoyable for both children and adults. It touches on a variety of cultures and styles, and the rhythms and lyrics are fun. My only complaint is that the words can be hard to understand, and the lyrics aren't in the cd book/jacket thing. I'd like to sing along with it, and teach my son, but I can't understand the words sometime!

Early Childhood Educator says this CD is GREAT for kids!,

I was recently at a professional conference and was informed that music produced after 1960 is no good for kids because of the syncopation which makes it too difficult for kids to find the "steady beat" which is critical in developing a musical intelligence. This CD, being all folk music, makes it easy to hear the beat. Not only that but the selections and artists are appealing for adults as well as kids. It's one of those CD's you can enjoy WITH your kids. I happen to be one of those adults who cannot stand Barney! If you are too, this CD is for you!

All of the songs on the CD are excellent. I especially like Doc Watson's rendition of the 1864-song "Grandfather's Clock". Buckwheat Zydeco's "Crawfish Song" is also refreshingly good. The kids enjoy the CD immensely and adore Pete Seeger's "She'll be coming around the mountain," but you should be prepared to listen to the first few songs over and over and over as your kids' attention spans wane. We usually just leave the CD playing in the background. This is a wonderful collection.

What a wonderful selection of music! There is not a song on here that my very opinionated 3 year old would not want to listen to over and over again! But he especially likes the bug song, and the car song, come to think of it, the crawfish song and "Coming Around the Mountain" and....the list goes on!

I love this CD. I first got it on cassette and broke the cassette because we listened to it too much (before my child was 9 months old!) Based upon this CD, I purchased about five OTHER CD's (from the various artists) and I have to say that many of the other CD's are best represented by only one song! There is not a SINGLE song on this that I don't like -- and that's saying a lot! ("She'll be comin' around the mountain when she comes" can get just a *bit* old, but hey) Buy this, send it to all of your relatives. Nothing compares to American folk for a lovely introduction to baby-friendly music! (well, korean songs are really neat, but you have to know the language and I don't.)

This sure isn't "Barney" type music! We love this cd. Our seven month old enjoys listening to it and we love it too. This collection of folk songs are are hip covers by artists like Pete Seeger, Michelle Shocked, Jerry Garcia, Cedella Marley Booker. If you have kids and you really like music, you must have this cd.

My 3 y.o. loved it. The music is upbeat and fun, and you'll crack your kid up when you sing your own version of Ridin' in My Car. And Their Ain't No Bugs on Me is a great song. I don't know about your kid, but mine can handle a lyric like "How in the hell can the old folks tell ..." especially when sung so cheerfully and, um, innocuously. Mostly, it's a cd that you yourself will enjoy listening to ... even (believe it or not) the supplied version of Skip to My Lou.

I too am a "concerned mother who ACTUALLY read the lyrics" (sniff!) and I'm extremely concerned that people who are that offended by such a playful, mild phrase are raising children. Please. Lighten up, or indulge in Barney.
Beautiful, layered work on this cd: a pleasure to listen to, dance to, sing along with. From age 2 to 38 in this house, we're enthralled.

Great CD,

My child and I enjoy the CD very much. Worth every penny for the Craw fish song alone.
FYI: The obscenity a previous reviewer is referring to is the use of the words "Heck" and "Hell" in the "Ain't No Bugs On Me" song (..how the heck can I wash my neck" and ("... how the hell can the old folks tell").

A Child's Celebration of Folk Music is my favorite gift for babies and young people. I also have a copy for myself, and enjoy it very often. For a larger gift, I will add the Smithsonian record of childrens songs by Pete Seeger. Before purchasing these products, I checked the listing of songs and singers. It was impressive.
