Editorial Reviews

Review

This is Dylan Thomas's homage to the Christmases of his boyhood, when the snow was thicker and whiter, when everything about Christmas was better than it is now. (Sound familiar? Ah, the good old days!) It's the sheer acrobatic brilliance of the language here that we most love. This is the most delicious read-aloud for having words trip off the tongue. --Elizabeth Blumele, Publisher's Weekly --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

About the Author

Dylan Thomas was born in Swansea in October 1914, the son of a senior English master. On leaving school he worked on the South Wales Evening Post before embarking on his literary career in London. Not only a poet, he wrote short stories, film scripts, features and radio plays, the most famous being Under Milk Wood. He died in November 1953, shortly after his thirty-ninth birthday. He is buried in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire, which had become his main home since 1949. Edward Ardizzone was born October 16, 1900 in Haiphong, French Indochina (now Vietnam) and moved to England when he was five years old. He wrote and illustrated the story of Little Tim and the Brave Sea Captain for his own children; Oxford University Press published it in 1935 with great success. This book led to several more in the popular "Tim" series. Ardizzone won the first Kate Greenaway Medal in 1956 for Tim All Alone and was named Commander, Order of British Empire in 1971. He died in 1979.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than a Christmas story., October 22, 1997
By
Scaring sleeping uncles by popping balloons. Getting a hatchet by mistake. Snowballing cats. Dylan Thomas has captured the perfect Christmas. Without any moral, very little plot, and a concern only for the child's perspective, this little piece sticks in my mind better than any other Christmas story I've ever read. Between drunk Auntie Hannah singing in the backyard and the haunted house down the streets where a group of mischievous carollers get the living hell scared out of them, "A Child's Christmas in Wales" is everything Christmas should be: funny, happy, poignant, a little sad, and fattening. Keep a bowl of candy nearby when you read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Faded Cups and Saucers, August 11, 2011
Here's a little sample: "...and some few small aunts, not wanted in the kitchen, nor anywhere else for that matter, sat on the very edges of their chairs, poised and brittle, afraid to break, like faded cups and saucers." Delightful. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best when read aloud, January 23, 2012

Best when read aloud. I found my voice morphing into something approximating Richard Burton's. A terrific introduction to Dylan Thomas, particularly for children. But it's the adults who will appreciate the recounting of childhood memories.

One Christmas was so much like another, in those years around the sea-town corner now and out of all sound except the distant speaking of the voices I sometimes hear a moment before sleep, that I can never remember whether it snowed for six days and six nights when I was twelve or whether it snowed for twelve days and twelve nights when I was six. Read the first page
