This review is from: A Child's History of America: Some Ribs and Riffs for the 60s (Hardcover)
Newman was a brilliant eclectic, a wonderful writer and keen observer of myriad quirky details that lend so much pleasure to his essays. It's an amazing pleasure to find this book still in print. The volume itself consists of reflections on topics like Americans abroad, the Vietnam morass, the state of education, politics, the counter-culture and much else. The text is set with broad margins, which Newman uses to add wry contextual quotations from other books, men and women of letters, operating manuals, news headlines, wall signs and his own asides. I can't imagine trying to understand the period without Newman as a guide: thoughtful, wise, and quite often really, really funny.
