PAUL KAPLAN: A CHILD'S ODYSSEY, THIRD EDITION (2001), January 6, 2010
This review is from: A Child's Odyssey: Child and Adolescent Development (Hardcover)
I teach child psychology at a college, and have used the Kaplan book as the required textbook since 2001. I have stayed longer with this book than the usual 4-5 years, because I wrote the 550 page Test Bank that is given to professors who adopt the book. This Third Edition remains as the most recent version, because author Paul Kaplan (State University of New York, Stony Brook) retired in 2008. The book has a Study Guide, which is NOT recommended. The study guide is brief and is badly prepared. The study guide author also wrote the study guide for the previous (second) edition, and most multiple-choice items were rolled forward into the third edition without checking in advance whether the narrative coverage in the revised textbook remained the same. There are several items in the study guide for which the answers cannot be found in the textbook, because of changed coverage. This is an unforgivable error. The book follows a chronological arrangement, with a few opening general chapters, followed by groupings of 2-3 chapters arranged by age level. There are three chapters on infancy, two on preschoolers, two on grade schoolers, and two on teenagers. Very extensive coverage is give to the topic of infant attachment, a topic on which the author did original research. Used copies of this book are selling for inflated high prices, considering the book's advanced age. (I give a few free copies of textbooks, purchased on Amazon, to students who earn top grades on tests, or to those who are present on the first day of the semester.) I am now planning to switch to a more recently dated textbook because of pressure from my campus's curriculum committee, but I remain happy with Paul Kaplan's writing and coverage.

Great I'm so pleased I can't believe I was able to get this book so cheap. It was so cheap I actually wondered if I would receive it at all, maybe it was a typo, 47c ??? but Wow there it was in my hands. Thank you Amazon! You've made my study so much easier.
