About the Author

Ariel Dorfman is a renowned Chilean author. Pablo Neruda is one of Latin America's best-loved poets, his most famous work being "Canto General." Born in Chile, and widely respected for his outspoken political views, he died only days after the coup against the popularly elected Allende government in September 1973. Salvador Allende was the popularly elected president of Chile, overthrown by a bloody, US-sponsored coup led by General Pinochet on September 11, 1973. Editors Pilar Aguilera and Ricardo Fredes are young Chileans who now live in Australia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inconvenient truths about US-backed state terror., November 27, 2008

This review is from: Chile: El Otro 11 de Septiembre: Una antologia acerca del golpe de estado en 1973 (Ocean Sur) (Spanish Edition) (Paperback)
Right-wingers are often trying to 'adapt' history to suit the needs of the power elite. In Chile, the election of Allende threatened the profits of transnational corporations like Anaconda Copper. In this book, Dorfman and others reveal the ways in which the power elite of the U.S. operate like the mafia and protect their 'turf' through violence, with 'statesmen' like Henry Kissinger being one of the head musclemen The Trials of Henry Kissinger. There are even authors who have themselves been involved with this thuggery, like John Perkins Confessions of an Economic Hit Man.
The publisher 'Ocean Sur' has a vast collection on the ugly history of the U.S. in Latin America, and the heroic resistance and resiliance of its people. Today, Michelle Bachelet is the president of Chile. Bachelet was tortured by Pinochet's regime, and her father was killed by it. These facts, and the facts of thousands of other Chileans being brutalized through the evil of the U.S. empire have not been given the airing they deserve. 'El Otro 11 de Septiembre' is an important effort to revive that history that some would like to rationalize or send down the 'memory hole.'

1.0 out of 5 stars re-writting history, February 2, 2005
Allende won with only the 36% of the votes, and tried to create in the southern tip of Southamerica a new Cuba, in the cold war era.
Leftwings are experts in "adapting" the history to their convenience. Chilean armed forces liberated Chile from Communism. The facts shall be analysed within their context, back in 1973, when the country was filled by cuban "advisors", training terrorist to prepare a civil war.
