3.0 out of 5 stars Troubles and Thrills February 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Chill Run by Russell Brooks is a reasonably entertaining and breezy crime thriller, with a nice fast pace and some engaging characters.

The novel's strength lies in its well depicted main characters, still full of youthful dreams and plans, even if a bit world weary around the edges. The author does a fine job of letting the reader empathize with Eddie, Corey and Jordyn, by presenting them not only as normal, capable people, but also as rash, impulsive, moody and desperate as the situation warrants. Eddie's family situation especially came off as genuine and honest. You connect with the protagonists and their difficulties carry you through the story.

I did have a few problems with the book, however. I thought the plot catalyst a bit on the weak side for my taste, although not too improbable (and I did relate to the motivation behind the scheme) so I was willing to mostly buy into it. Also, I felt some of the secondary character reactions came too easily, without enough inner conflict, especially the wife's acceptance of Eddie's story and the scene with the Governor. I think a bit more build-up and character tension would have served the story better in those instances. And personally, the minor plot point using the program Canadian Idol bugged me due to fact it the show hasn't aired on Canadian TV since 2008; to me this detail either dates, or seemingly contradicts with, the timeline of the book.

Despite some of my quibbles though, I enjoyed reading this novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Action Packed With Humour Along The Way December 1, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This book has a great storyline which gets going right from the start. I instantly liked the characters and I thought that Eddie and Corey made a great duo, I very often found myself chuckling at them!

I loved the fact that Eddie was a writer who was trying to get published, I think that the desperation he felt at trying to get published was very true to life and came across as realistic.

I really felt for him when everything started going wrong following the plan that they had come up with. It seems to snowball more and more out of control and keeps you wanting to read more to see how he's going to get out of it.

I enjoyed the story more and more as it developed but didn't quite manage to guess the ending, which was a nice surprise.

This book has everything in it: action, drama humour and romance! It is well written and well worth a read

4.0 out of 5 stars A GOOD READ November 17, 2012
By linda
Format:Kindle Edition
Twenty-four year old Eddie Barrow Jr. lives in Quebec, Canada and is having a lousy day. He is fired from his job, and his girlfriend left him. Could it get worse? Absolutely. Eddie's parents are from Barbados and moved to Canada to better themselves. He and his sister were both born in Quebec, and Eddie's desire to be the next great novelist has turned his parents against him. They do not support his career choice and never hesitate to tell him so. But, his best friend, Corey, and Corey's girlfriend, Jordyn, give him the encouragement his family fails to provide.

After he receives another disappointing rejection from a publisher, his friends come up with a ridiculous plan to get his name in the papers. Jordyn admits to Eddie that she is a dominatrix. One of the other doms she knows is going to be seeing a Fortune 500 CEO, and Eddie should take her friends place. Once he and the woman are in the hotel room for a while his friends would call the newspapers and Eddie would have his name splashed all over the media. If the plan sounds crazy, what happens in that hotel room is totally nuts. Eddie finds himself unable to follow through with the plan and learns of the biggest scam to milk millions out of Canadian investors and investors in other countries.

What happens next is a comedy of errors. Men break into the hotel room guns blazing. They kill their target, but fortunately, they miss Eddie, who is hiding in the next room. Once again Corey comes to his rescue, just as he did fifteen years ago when skinheads were attacking Eddie. He drives Eddie away from the hotel, but not without being seen by the hotel guards. Now Eddie and Corey are wanted for murder. But it gets worse. When Jordyn comes to help them, they find themselves accused of kidnapping her.

It doesn't take long for the assassins to also find out who Eddie and Corey are, and where they live. Unfortunately for them, Eddie, Corey and Jordyn are gone. Where can they go? Not only is Canada broadcasting their pictures all over the media, but the United States as well. How can they prove their innocence when everything points to them?

We know from the very beginning of the book, who ordered the hit, but watching the three friends trying to prove their innocence is the best part. The interaction between Eddie and Corey at times made me laugh out loud; they are two very unique characters.

A well paced story that kept me interested. The characters were well defined without being cliches. It didn't go so fast that details were lost.
