MIDWEST REVIEW by Cynthia Penn
Chill Waters
Joan Hall Hovey

Evil stalks the unsuspecting --Recommended.
Memories of idyllic summers spent with her grandmother motivate Rachael to buy the house in Jenny's Cove. Tired of the arguments and silences, she had tried to breath fire back into the dying embers of her marriage, only to discover her husband warming someone else's bed. Now at age forty-five and in the process of a divorce, Rachael longs for the simplicity of her childhood. Iris Brandt recognizes the arrival of evil, chilled by the malevolent energy that follows Rachael. The practical, no nonsense proprietress of local gas station feels compelled to warn her. Indeed, Iris would be correct, because from the moment of Rachael's arrival, a man watches. He has already killed, and mercilessly will do so again. And his stalking of Rachael has only just begun. Author Joan Hovey creates a taut thriller in CHILL WATERS. Woven with an uncanny magic, CHILL WATERS is rich in sensory imagery and dense with the darkness that lies in the heart of a madman. Hovey creates a rich cast of characters, each uniquely realized and memorable. At age forty-five, heroine Rachael provides a refreshingly mature viewpoint who still manages to grow and change with the flow of the novel. She has raised her children and fled a failed marriage to take control of her life only to confront a madman. With believable vulnerabilities

5.0 out of 5 stars Chill Waters Very Chilling December 5, 2010
Format:Paperback
I love when I discover new thriller/mystery authors. I have just finished Joan Hall Hovey's Chill Waters and it is a superb suspense novel. She grabs you from the opening pages and the suspense does not let up until the chilling conclusion. Move over Mary Higgins Clark. Hall Hovey writes a taut psychological thriller without explosions or car chases, but this is truly well written suspense. I plan to check out her other novels, Nowhere to Hide and Listen to the Shadows. Joan, you have a new fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Immerse yourself in chilling suspense January 4, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Joan Hall Hovey's Nowhere to Hide was billed as scarier than Silence of the Lambs. It's easy to see why. The man of many faces, Charlie Morley, fits all the serial killer profile hallmarks: resentment of his mother, cruelty to animals, first killing as a child, and sexual sadism. He's also a sociopath who had unnatural feelings for his half-sister, who he killed. Tommy Prichard, the bad boy of Jenny's Cove, with an alcoholic father who has no regard for women, might follow the same pattern. The local authorities and the entire town think so, particularly after the murder of Tommy's girlfriend, Heather Myers, who bears a striking resemblance to Charlie Morley's stepsister Marie.

Unfortunately, Rachael Warren, moving back to Jenny's Cove to lick her wounds in her artist grandmother's old house after the breakup of her marriage, also resembles Marie. And Tommy gets the blame for some freakish stalker happenings at her cabin. But Heather, along with psychic artist Iris Brandt and Iris' handsome widowed nephew Peter, Tommy's teacher, believe the boy is innocent. Is Martin Dunn, Rachael's new tenant on her grandmother's property, just a harmless writer? And what happened to the mysterious doctor who attended Heather Myers just before she was murdered in the hospital? What sinister role does Tommy's abusive drunken father Nate play in the gruesome goings-on? Are Iris's psychic visions accurate? Will Tommy be exonerated? Why do the good residents of Jenny's Cove seem like such psycho magnets? Will Rachael and Peter find true romance? And will you be able to sleep with the lights off after reading CHILL WATERS, a taut thriller that combines well-drawn vivid characters with an engaging plot?

Rachael is a magnetically likeable heroine, and Peter Gardner fills his muscular frame well as her sleuthing counterpart concerned about his student. Rachael's transformation from walking wounded to feisty survivor will leave you cheering.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story but .... December 18, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
First and foremost, I found the story line engaging and enough suspense to hold the readers interest. Others have discussed the premise of the book, so I won't repeat them. I had to give this an average rating because, although I did enjoy the story itself, the numerous spelling errors, missed words in sentences, and poor formatting for the Kindle were very apparent. While I could assign fault of this to the formatting process, what I found to be more annoying was the writer's inability to differentiate between the meaning of the words "then" and "than". This repeated misuse of the words was often enough that it was apparent that it exceeded the concept of editing error. Perhaps this is a mere petty annoyance to many, but I would think that a published author should have a better grasp of the English language than was shown in this book.
