The work of major contemporary sculptors, the American John Chamberlain and the Spanish Basque Eduardo Chillida, is presented in these two well-produced monographs. Chamberlain is the better known here, since his colorful sculptures using sheet metal from junked cars have been widely exhibited and covered in the contemporary art press in this country over the past 25 years. The bulk of this volume is devoted to a catalogue raisonne of Chamberlain's sculptures; it includes entries for over 800 works. Information on materials, dimensions, provenance, current ownership, exhibitions and publications is given as known and small photographs are provided of most of the pieces. An interview of the artist by Sylvester, an essay by Kertess, a biographic chronology, an exhibition history, and a selective bibliography are also included. The volume will be most appropriate for research collections. The Chillida volume, on the other hand, provides an overview or intro duction to his work that will be suitable for a wider audience of students and interested laypersons as well as specialists. Two essays on Chillida attempt to characterize and interpret his work and are accompanied by 180 large illustrations. The volume also includes a biographic chronology, lists of exhibitions and works in public collections, and a bibliography.
