Editorial Reviews

From URB Magazine

With Europe ablaze last year to the sounds (and hype) of the most recent wave of "chill-out" music, a smoky amalgamation of lazy beats and future thinking, it was only a matter of time before weary American clubbers needed something to relax to as well. Only hastened, of course, by the post-9/11 mood of politically correct somberness.

London's club-culture brand pioneers Ministry of Sound have their eyes set on the New World and take a tasteful step with The Chillout Session, a sexy selection of soothing melodies and memories, opening with Massive Attack's timeless "Teardrop."

New sound system on the block Zero 7 get prominent positioning, first with "Give It Away" and later remixing Radiohead's "Climbing Up the Walls" into a dubbed-out torch song (they also give Lambchop's "Up With People" a mighty remix).

More subtly blended than mixed, the compilation unearths glittery gems like Beloved's "Sweet Harmony" (immortalized on "Beavis and Butthead") and Tranquility Bass's eternal "Cantamila."

The second disc really lights up on the Soul Hooligan's dreamy mix of Stone Roses' classic "Shoot You Down," Bent's sampledelic "I Love My Man" before ending on A Man Called Adam's warm "Easter Song. "

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheesy album cover but superb song selection, May 5, 2002
By
This review is from: The Chillout Session (Audio CD)
Forget about the cheesy album cover. The song selection on this 2 cd compilation is choice. Ten times better than "Chilled Spirit" which was just a rehash of every other chillout compilation that is churned out on the assembly line. Now I will admit that I have a few of the songs already but the good news is that the majority is music that I haven't heard before. Ministry of Sound may come up with the dumbest album covers that I have ever seen but they certainly know how to choose what songs should go on there compilations. "The Chillout Session" is kinda like "Ultra Chilled" but less commercialized. As much as I love Badly Drawn Boy's "The Shining", just hearing that song between Boards of Canada and Full Intention makes it seem out of place. Kinda sticks out like a sore thumb. Between the two cds, I have to say that the second disc is slightly better. I love the inclusion of Sigur Ros' "Staralfur", my favorite Sigur Ros song. I always thought the Icelandic band would be ideal for any chillout compilation. I will have to say that I'm sick and tired of hearing FSOL's "Papa New Guinea". That song is old and needs to be retired. The least MOS could have done was to choose a different FSOL song but at least they didn't stick Delerium's "Silence" on the album like most chillout albums do. On the first cd, I particularly enjoyed Nightmares On Wax's "Les Nuits" and Tranquility Bass's "Cantamila". Overall, "The Chillout Session" is definitely a high quality chillout compilation that doesn't stick with the same ol' songs like most compilations that I have seen lately. Definitely a must-have for those who enjoy this type of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great chillout, lounging CD, February 6, 2002
This review is from: The Chillout Session (Audio CD)
Just picked this up at the store yesterday and I love it! I was hearing so much about the release of this CD that I had to check it out! And I must say that I am not disappointed at all. The CD blends a great mixture of electronic and alternative downtempo music. I listen to a lot of electronic music, but this is great because it captures certain moods that other genres do not. I suggest going out and buying this CD! Ministry of Sound definitely releases some of the best dance and chillout compilations out there!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Start for your Chillout Collection, September 27, 2004
This review is from: The Chillout Session (Audio CD)
Lounge-influenced triphop has been around since the middle 1990s, and still hasn't grabbed the mainstream by the throat. So the frequent 9-11 allusions to Chill's "popularity" always leaves me befuddled, because the average man on the street still has absolutely no idea who Air, Zero 7, or Massive Attack are. That's a shame, because these artists are among the best of the Chill movement, creating well-produced downtempo pop with retro and electronica overtones. If you'd like to learn more about this interesting and overlooked modern pop genre, "The Chillout Session" provides a two-CD sampler to the works of artists and producers you've probably never heard of. Once you listen this music, you may get hooked on this primarily European genre. I know I did!
