5.0 out of 5 stars Cheesy album cover but superb song selection
Forget about the cheesy album cover. The song selection on this 2 cd compilation is choice. Ten times better than "Chilled Spirit" which was just a rehash of every other chillout compilation that is churned out on the assembly line. Now I will admit that I have a few of the songs already but the good news is that the majority is music that I haven't heard...

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
This is typical compilation cd-money-rip-off. They crank 2 cd full of songs but what you really get is maybe 6 good songs. Others are just average and mostly boring.

... No wonder people are opting for alternative music sources.

Forget about the cheesy album cover. The song selection on this 2 cd compilation is choice. Ten times better than "Chilled Spirit" which was just a rehash of every other chillout compilation that is churned out on the assembly line. Now I will admit that I have a few of the songs already but the good news is that the majority is music that I haven't heard before. Ministry of Sound may come up with the dumbest album covers that I have ever seen but they certainly know how to choose what songs should go on there compilations. "The Chillout Session" is kinda like "Ultra Chilled" but less commercialized. As much as I love Badly Drawn Boy's "The Shining", just hearing that song between Boards of Canada and Full Intention makes it seem out of place. Kinda sticks out like a sore thumb. Between the two cds, I have to say that the second disc is slightly better. I love the inclusion of Sigur Ros' "Staralfur", my favorite Sigur Ros song. I always thought the Icelandic band would be ideal for any chillout compilation. I will have to say that I'm sick and tired of hearing FSOL's "Papa New Guinea". That song is old and needs to be retired. The least MOS could have done was to choose a different FSOL song but at least they didn't stick Delerium's "Silence" on the album like most chillout albums do. On the first cd, I particularly enjoyed Nightmares On Wax's "Les Nuits" and Tranquility Bass's "Cantamila". Overall, "The Chillout Session" is definitely a high quality chillout compilation that doesn't stick with the same ol' songs like most compilations that I have seen lately. Definitely a must-have for those who enjoy this type of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great chillout, lounging CD, February 6, 2002
This review is from: The Chillout Session (Audio CD)
Just picked this up at the store yesterday and I love it! I was hearing so much about the release of this CD that I had to check it out! And I must say that I am not disappointed at all. The CD blends a great mixture of electronic and alternative downtempo music. I listen to a lot of electronic music, but this is great because it captures certain moods that other genres do not. I suggest going out and buying this CD! Ministry of Sound definitely releases some of the best dance and chillout compilations out there!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Start for your Chillout Collection, September 27, 2004
This review is from: The Chillout Session (Audio CD)
Lounge-influenced triphop has been around since the middle 1990s, and still hasn't grabbed the mainstream by the throat. So the frequent 9-11 allusions to Chill's "popularity" always leaves me befuddled, because the average man on the street still has absolutely no idea who Air, Zero 7, or Massive Attack are. That's a shame, because these artists are among the best of the Chill movement, creating well-produced downtempo pop with retro and electronica overtones. If you'd like to learn more about this interesting and overlooked modern pop genre, "The Chillout Session" provides a two-CD sampler to the works of artists and producers you've probably never heard of. Once you listen this music, you may get hooked on this primarily European genre. I know I did!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent session, but a bit of a rehash of their previous, February 20, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Chillout Session (Audio CD)
I picked this disc up as I am a big fan of MOS and their Chillout Sessions (my girlfriend calls them makeout mixes). This new set gives a few new songs that are worth noting, Boards of Canada's "ROYGBIV", the remix of Radiohead's "Climbing Up The Walls" and some badly needed dZihan and Kamien. But, if you compare the track listing from the previous 2 Chillout Sessions (Vol. 1 & 2), you'll see almost a dozen repeated tracks. If this is your first entry into the Chillout world, definitely pick it up (or the excellent Volume 1 or 2). If you have the other 2, there's only a few new songs to wet your appetite on this collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great One, May 30, 2004

I have all of the MOS chillout CDs and like them all very much, this one included. There are a few mix points that don't go as smooth as they perhaps could but that is a minor note in an otherwise excellent selection of tracks. Great for at work or in the car or when relaxing at home.

I like every one of the MOS Chillout CD's with the 2002 one being my favorite. This one is quite good as well, I listen to it all the time at work (along with other MOS chillout CDs and some Cafe Del Mar stuff and others)and it makes the day go by smoother. It is also good to for listening to in the car or after a night out dancing. While I do not much care for their dance selections (too pop dance for me) whoever is in charge of choosing the chill stuff at MOS is doing a good job.

If you know that the majority of these tunes have been out for quite sometime you probably won't be that interested in this comp. If not, then it's a GREAT starting point for you. The mixing isn't the best but the song selection is choice. Highlights are: Liz Frasier w/Massive, Jon Marsh of The Beloved (an all time favorite), a great remix of a classic Future Sound of London song, Bent (overlooked in the US), a perfect Thievery selection and an almost spiritual Lambchop song. Whether you're waking up, coming down or somewhere in between it's a great way to spend some time and relax.

This CD is great for after parties, doin your homework to, or tryin to get a girl in the sack. The first day I got this, I played it in my room for no more than 10 minutes before all my roommates were asking me what this was and if they could borrow it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great and interesting compilation, February 9, 2002
This review is from: The Chillout Session (Audio CD)
Well, this is weird I don't usually write reviews. I was actually looking for a Badly Drawn Boy Cd for my girlfriend and I ran into this Cd.[...].Anyway, I listened to the Cds (2CD pack) and immediately found that the Cd had a very good mixture of soothing music with some interesting electronic verse alternative feel to them. I heard of Massive Attack before so I immediately recognized their track on this compilation. Some of the songs I found kind of amusing like Roygbiv - Boards of Canada. All and all, while looking for a present for my girlfriend I ran into a really really good compilation of "Chilled" music (I guess you call it), and a present for myself. Additionally, here are some other songs I think you (people out there) should check out from this compilation. Les Nuits - Nightmares,I'll be waiting - Shena, I love my man - Bent. I guess you could say this a great mix of relaxing music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reunited, October 4, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Chillout Session (Audio CD)
I originally bought this album in 2001 from my local small town college record store, Rodeo Records. It was at the check out counter as a used Import. Score. I knew nothing about any of the artists and barely knew anything about the genre. But even at a young age, I knew MOS was good stuff like almost everything from the UK. Without a doubt the best 'blind' music purchase I've ever made. I'm horrible with CDs and lost it at some point, but was thrilled to find it again online.

The best thing about this 'chill-out' compilation is that is not just loungey, drowsy electro beats. The compilation switches effortlessly between sultry make out music, "Hayling"..."Teardrop, to chill but still uplifting tracks like "Sweet Harmony". In all a very solid compilation.
