Book Description

September 18, 1997
A collection of eight chilling stories of strange forces, haunting and magical transformations. In one story a dog's "dream wraith" avenges his master's death. Each story explores a different dimension of life, or sometimes death.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7?A collection of eight delightfully scary stories. They won't cause nightmares but will send delicious tingles down the spine. It is only on deeper reflection that the subtitle truly comes into play. The tales are carefully constructed on several levels. They can be read merely for their creepy twist or scare value. A closer reading will allow for the exploration of characters and for the strong but subtly delivered messages to come through. It is this depth and added dimension that makes this book fascinating. The ghosts, spirits, time travel, and artifices are all familiar to the genre, but Vivelo twists the familiar to make each telling original and fresh. The dialogue rings true when read aloud. There is certainly the opportunity for discussion when the reading is done. Even the format is fresh. The pages are longer and narrower than standard juvenile fare and plenty of white space makes the print easy to read. A good addition with many possibilities for a variety of readers.?Molly S. From Booklist

Gr. 5^-9. Even though none of these eight stories feature human-eating monsters or razor-fingered psychopaths, they are creepy and weird enough to appeal to readers, especially those who don't want something too scary. Vivelo turns everyday experiences into something strange and fearsome: two children receive unexpected help rescuing trapped miners, an experienced teacher deftly manages disruptive students, the mysterious disappearance of an heirloom changes a girl's future. Four of the eight stories previously appeared in Vivelo's A Trick of the Light (1987), but the new ones make this collection a worthwhile purchase. Suggest this to classroom teachers as a model for creative writing. Chris Sherman --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
