Chilton's Mercedes-Benz 1968-73 Repair Guide Review,
By Heath E. Allen (Dublin, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chilton's Repair and Tune-Up Guide: Mercedes-Benz 1968-73 (Chilton's Repair & Tune-Up Guides) (Paperback)
The repair guide is an excellent source if you want to know just about everything you'll need to do to a Mercedes-Benz vehicle in this time frame. Engine rebuilding, wiring diagrams, specifications, fuel injection, carburation, diesel-all in step by step detail. I've got a 280SE & 280SEL, both with the 4.5 (M117)engine, and the Chilton's has eliminated hours of tracing wires, measuring pump pressure, and wondering how to pull the engine from my work with these two vehicles. I'd recommend it to any enthusiast, from professional to novice.

Light on info for diesels, fuzzy pictures, but not bad otherwise.,

This review is from: Chilton's Repair and Tune-Up Guide: Mercedes-Benz 1968-73 (Chilton's Repair & Tune-Up Guides) (Paperback)
It's a typical Chilton's manual from this era- text well done, but with B&W pictures that are a little hard to discern details from. I wished there was more info for the diesel engine models. If you're new to diesels, you'll need more than you find in this book, but if you've got the general background, it will give you the specifics.
As with most Chilton's or Haynes manuals, they assume you're not competent enough to rebuild something like injection pump or transmission and don't even try to cover such topics. Everything at the simpler levels gets reasonable coverage. You won't find any new manuals for 40-year old cars, so if you have a chance to get this, it's worth buying and a lot cheaper than running down an old factory manual.

This review is from: Chilton's repair and tune-up guide: Mercedes-Benz 2
This is the long awaited epic sequel to the Chilton Mercedes 1 book. I had previously owned the Chilton 1 book, and was missing a few pieces of information for the 1970 models which was difficult to find in the Mercedes DVD for this era. The Chilton 2 took over where the "1" left off and filled in the gaps nicely, especially with regard to the emmision controls. I was able to rebuild the carburators and controls and the car runs sweet. As an added bonus I used the wiring diagrams to diagnos and fix the horn. In the end it is a gripping tale about the quest to put the piston ring into the cracks of ..... Wait a minute, wrong review and wrong book!
Highly recommended for tinkerers with a 1968-72 classic Mercedes. |
