A Phenomenon, August 7, 2010
I just completed my first listen, with great pleasure. I must admit I am prejudiced, having seen Ms Morena perform last night with Hermeto Pascoal's current group. Pascoal is, of course, a force of nature, and the group is outstanding. While Pascoal played any number of keyboard and wind instruments, including what appeared from my very good seat to be a shofar and a teakettle, he had able assistance from a fine saxophone player (and a second on one piece), a terrific young piano player, and solid backing from the balance. Morena played guitar on one number, some percussion on others, but spent the better part of a long (but not long enough for me)set vocalizing. She did not sing and, indeed, I do not have the word for what she did, highly pitched and perfectly tuned and harmonizing voicings, On this CD, she does the same but sings more "conventionally" as well, but this music is far from conventional. All it is is beautiful. Highly recommended, only lacking a star only because I just saw them live and fleshed-out with a larger group. They had a more recent CD for sale as well, but I purchased only this, and the other (also, I believe, the duo) may not be available other than at performances. Listen to this one, suck it up and be patient for more from Morena!
